Be it known that I, BRADFORD H. PENDLE- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at specification.
My invention-relates to lighting devices, and my object is to provide a means for this purpose which is more particularly intended for gas lighting but by slight modification may be readily adapted to use for lighting ordinary oil lamps, gas fires, tire.
The construction, method of applying to an ordinary gas burner, and the method of operation are described hereinafter, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l-is aafront' elevation, attached to a gas burner. Fig. 2 is a left hand side elevation of the construction shown in Fig.1. Fig. 3 is \a front and Fig. 4 a side elevation of the main portion of the case for containing the interior operative parts, together with the scratcher, as will be further explained. Fig. 5 isa plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the front portion of thecase. Fig. 7 is'a view of the opposite side of Fig. 6, showing inside arrangement of igniting tape and other operative parts. Fig. 8 shows, respectively, front, side and inside elevations of the re -movable front of the case, same as Figs. 6 and 7 but with all the operative parts, except the tape roller, removed. Fig. 9 is a front elevation of the four tooth ratchetwheel, and Fig. 10 the pawl therefor. Fig. 11 shows, respectively, front and side elevations and a plan View of the weighted operative lever whose pawl Fig. 10 engages ratchet wheel Fig. 9. Fig. 12 is a side elevation of the shaft upon which the igniting tape is wound when the device is in action. Fig. 13 is a face and edge elevation of the igniting tape, showing arrangement of igniting points.

The main portion of the case A is rectangular in form and open at both ends and in front, with the exception of two projections B and B near the top end. The scratcher C is attached as shown, and its top portion is bent over and down, the point thereof coming in close'proximity to a roller D which is mounted on apin near the top, inside face of the front part E of the case, when the parts are all assembled, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
At F is the winding shaft which passes through the front plate E of the case, and is held in position by an inside washer and the ratchet wheel G, both of these parts being firmly secured to the shaft, which is free to revolve one fourth of a revolution at a time, by pulling downward on cord H whose upper end is attached to the outer end of pawl I which is pivoted to lever J and engages the teeth of ratchet wheel G, lever J being loosely mounted on shaft F between ratchet wheel G and a washer at the outer end of the shaft; there being an outward projection K of the lower end of the case plate E, to serve as a stop against pulling lever J around any farther in one direction than is shown by the broken lines Fig. 1; and there is another step L to prevent the weight J from carrying the lever farther around than the position shown in the solid lines.
There is a spring pawl M, Figs. 1 and 6, having the free end turned outward to engage with the teeth of ratchet wheel G, and serves as a stop to prevent a backward movement thereof.
The pawl I is strongly pivoted to the end of lever J, by a portion of the end of the lever being bent upon itself to form a lug so that the pawl pin is supported at both sides of the pawl, and may therefore be comparatively small. The pawl operates without the aid of a spring through the weight of the attached cord and its knob, there being a projection at I of the pawl which serves to pre vent it moving far from operative position baokwardly.
.The tape N for holding the igniting points 0, is first placed in the coiled form around a pin P, after which its outer end is brought up around the roller D, thence down to the winding shaft F, where the end is inserted in the slot R and the shaft given a revolution to fasten the end of the tape therein. It is obvious that, since shaft F is turned buta fourth of a revolution at each pull of the cord H, this action would cause a less length of tape to bewound on shaft F at each fourth of a revolution at the beginning than when the tape has been almost all wound upon the shaft, so that, the igniting points 0 are placed gradually wider apart from the first to be used of the series, to the last, as is shown in Fig. 13, this arrangement of the igniting points insuring that but one at a time will be ignited by each pull of the cord.
The inside end of shaft F is prolonged sufficiently to enter a hole Q in the rear through the main portion of the case, when the portion shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is slid up into the main case under the projections B and B, the projections pressing upon the front plate E which serves as a spring to first bend outward and finally to force the end of the shaft into the hole Q, and thus form a catch to hold the two parts of the case in proper relative position. The front plate E, together with the operative parts are easily removed by first lifting outwardly upon the lower end of the plate, which disengages the end of the shaft, after which the plate may he slid downwardly and out.
It will be understood that the stud pin upon which roller D is mounted to revolve is of a length sufficient to cause its free end to press against the inside of the back of the casing and hold the front plate E close against the projections, B, B. By successively pulling downwardly upon cord I-I all of the igniting points 0 maybe fired as they pass under the scratcher C, as usual. The operative parts being all attached to the front plate or lid of the case, which has no projecting sides, the tape may be easily removed and a new tape put in its place.
I claim as my invention 1. In a lighting device, the case therefor comprising a back portion with sides and inward projections B and B therefrom, as described, the front side comprising a plate having the operative parts attached thereto, which plate is adapted to slide longitudinally into the said back portion under the said projections, a hole Q in the back portion to receive the free end of shaft F and serve in combination with the said projections for the purpose stated.
2. The combination in a lighting device having the main portion A of the casing with sides and projections 13 and B therefrom, and a scratcher C attached thereto, as described, of the front plate of the case with a roller mounted to revolve at one end thereof, and a tape winder shaft at the other, a tape having a series of igniting points thereon coiled around a pin between the roller and the shaft, a portion of the tape passing over the roller under the scratcher, and one end attached to the winder shaft which is adapted to wind up the tape and successively fire the igniting points, as shown and described.
3. In a lighting device, means for operating the tape winding shaft, comprising a ratchet wheel secured thereto and a weighted lever loosely mounted thereon, a pawl pivoted to the lever and adapted to engage the ratchet wheel, an actuating cord attached to the pawl and stops on the case for limiting the motion of the lever, and a pawl for preventing a backward motion of the ratchet wheel, the parts operating in combination for the purpose stated.
4. In a lighting device of the class described having a tape winder shaft with a limited intermittent movement, the tape having igniting points disposed thereon at a gradually increasing distance apart fronfthe first used to the last, for the purpose stated.
