SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,545, dated December 25, 1894.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, EDWIN O. MANNING, a

ington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such ascwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in instruments for the treatment of diseases, such as gonorrhea, of the mucous membrane of the penis. V

The object of the invention is to provide an improved instrument of the above character, which can be readily carried in the pocket, and which shall possess superioradvantages with respect to efficiency in operation.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts herein-' after fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle for containing a semi-fiuid healing composition or salve, showing my improved instrumentinserted therein. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the instrument removed from the bottle. Fig.3 is a similar View of theplunger removed from the tube. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are sections taken, respectively, on the lines 00-00, y-y, and 2-2, of Fig. 2.

In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a bottle of glass or other suitable material, for containing a semi-fluid medicated composition, composed of any suitable ingredients which have a tendency to heal the diseases which the instrument is designed to treat. This bottle is provided with a stopper 2, having a central aperture for the pashaving a rounded point so that it can be readily inserted in the penis, and is provided .intermediate of its ends with a series of Serial No. 519,052. alignedelongated slots 4:,the outer edges of which are rounded, as seen in Figs. 4 and 6, so as to avoid injury to the penis when inserted therein. Located within thistube is a plunger 5, consisting of a cylindrical rod, which fits snugly therein, but not too closely to preve'nt its free reciprocation. At its inner end the plunger is provided with a sponge 6, or ball or knob of other elastic material, which acts as a piston. At its opposite end the plunger is provided with a handle 7. The tube at its upper end is provided with a disk or shoulder 8, which acts as a cover for the opening in the stopper of the bottle and as a stop to prevent the tube slipping therein.

The operation is as follows: The tube is inserted in the penis and the plunger pulled outward, which will cause the pus or diseased matter to be drawn into the tube throughthe elongated slots. The tube is then withdrawn carrying with it the pus or other matter and is then cleaned; This operation is repeated as often as necessary to insure thorough cleansing of the penis. The tube is then dipped in the compound in the bottle with the plunger drawn outward whereby said compound will fill intothe tube. The tube is then again inserted in the penis and the plunger pushed in, forcing the compound out through the slots approximately the entire length of the tube. While the plunger is thus pushed in the tube is withdrawn and by reason of the plunger fitting snugly within the tube, the slots are closed thereby, preventing the compound from flowing back into the tube while the latter is being withdrawn. i

The instrument is preferably made of aluminum, although any other suitable material maybe employed. I It will be noted that the slots do 1101 extend from end to end of the tube, but are formed one above the other with an intervening solid portion 9, which serves to strengthen the tube.
