WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,279, dated December 18, 1894. Application iilcd April 14, 1894. Serial No. 507,554.I (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON SELLERS, a citizen Of the United States, residing at Muncie,
in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of wrenches that are constructed with double handle bars, and in which the jaws are set by opening and closing the handles; the objects being to construct a wrench that will be quickly adjusted to the vdierent sized nuts, and one that will be cheap and durable. Ais a stationary jaw, and B is the stationary handle ba'r. The said jaw and bar are madein one piece, their connection being formed by an enlarged angular body C. This body C is provided with a longitudinal slot D in which the shank of the movable handle E operates. The handle E is similar to the handle B, carrying on its inner end a jaw F, all of which is shown in the drawings. In the lower part of the slot D a pivoted notched block G is secured by the rivet H, most clearly shown in Fig. 2. The upper side of this block is provided with teeth or notches, which correspond and register with the teeth I in the under side of the shank of the handle E. When the wrench is closed up on a nut or set for a nut, as shown in Fig.l 1, then the teeth 4in the block and shankare meshed together,
holding and preventing the jaws from slip-v ping apart. Then when it is desired to adjust the wrench to a different sized nut or to close or open the jaws, it is done by springing the handles E and B apart, as shown in Fig. 2, and this disengages the teeth in the block and shank, allowing the jaws to be moved and adjusted as desired.
The outer endsof the handles are connected by a coil spring J, this spring being secured to each handle in a groove K by rivets L L, all as shown in the drawings. -The spring serves to draw the two handles together at all times when they are not pressed apart for 6o adjusting. g
The block G is pivoted so that its toothed face will stand lat all times parallel, or nearly so, to the toothed surface of the shank of the handle`E, as shown in Fig. 2, by One side Of the body C being broken away.
Having thus described my invention, I claim the following and desire to secure the same by`Letters Patent:
In a wrench the combination with the stationary jaw A-and handle B having a slotted portion C, of a serrated block G pivoted in the slotted portion, the movable jaw F having the handle/E passing through the slotted portion C of the stationary handle, serrations on the under face of the handle E adapted to engage the serrations on the block G, recesses in the outer ends of the handles and a spring J having its opposite ends pivoted in the recesses for normally holding the handles together, substantially as described.
