, to admit of two valves, and a plate, the letter A, in the drawing represents the main slide valve, the letter B, represents a plate let in from the top, forming a seating for cut oft" valve C, resting on a ledge formed around the inside of chest, andfastened down with set screws from the cover of chest. In the center of plate B, there is an opening represented in the drawing by D, larger than the steam opening in the cylinder, so as there will be no obstruction to the steam passing in when the cut 0H valve is thrown off.
