WIRE-FENCE STAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,981, dated December 18, 1894.
Application filed May 5, 1894. Serial No. 510,237. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL B. YOUNOE, of Centre, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Stays; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved wire fence stay; and it consists in the novel manner of applying the same to the fence which will be fully described hereinafter and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of .a fence provided with my improved stay. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached view of one of the stays.
The object of my invention is to provide a fence stay formed of a chain of links which will hold the wires properly positioned at all times, and which is prevented from displacement by the peculiar manner of applying it to the wires.
vA are the longitudinal strands of the fence and at suitable distances apart are arranged the link stays B. The link depending from the upper strand consists of a depending loop 0 having its ends wrapped around the strand as shown. The links intermediate the top and bottom strands are formed as follows: One end of the wire is first wrapped around the strand at D. The wire is then looped upward at E through the next adjaoent link and from thence it is brought down and again wrapped at F around the strand, after which it is formed into the depending loop G-to take the loop of the link next below, and from this loop the end of the wire is returned again to the strand. and wrapped therearound, as well as at the wraps D and F, thus completing a most secure fastening for the link so that it is quite impossible for the same to work loose.
The stay herein shown and described differs and is far superior to that class of stays in which only the free ends of the wires are coiled about the runners, leaving the whole long side of the double link unbraced. In the construction just mentioned a severe strain upon the runners will pull the stays out of shape owing to the fact that the double links are not'braced between their ends, thus leaving the runners at unequal distances apart. The central coil holds the stay positively from vertical displacement so that it is impossible to pull the same out of place or shape by vertical strain.
It will be noted that the stay is formed ofa single piece of wire, and that'it is applied to the fence. after the strands thereof have been positioned.
