To all whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, ELBERT M. COUCH, a citizen of the United Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Oounterboring'the Barrels of Revolver-Casings,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanism for internally counterborin g holes of annular objects which extend radially in or relative thereto. 1
An exemplification of the character of work upon which the improved contrivance is applicable is found in the circular box-like case of a description of revolving fire-arm shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, granted to me March 13, 1894, No. 516,47 6, which case has, integrally therewith, the barrel extending radially from its rim.
It is very desirable to have the bore of the barrel at its inner end which merges into the interior of the casing counterbored or rearwardly flaring, and in order to produce the arm with this feature it has been heretofore necessary to separately form the case and breech block and screw-unite them; but now in order that the much preferred integral construction of the case and counterbored barrel may be practicable and the difficulty may be overcome of entering the counterbore tool within the inner end of the barrel, and of advancing and rotating the tool without interference by any part of the case or annular part to the rear of the barrel or bore extending radially of the said annular part, I have devised mechanism which consists substantially in combination with a part about which the annular object having the radial bore, to be counterbored may have a rest or bearing, of the tool adapted to have a location within the annular object and to have 'its working extremity entered in the inner end of the radial bore of said object, a carrier for the tool with which the latter has a rotary engagement and which is movable to advance the tool into the bore of the work, and a power-shaft adapted to be entered from. the outer end of the bored work therewith to an engagement with the outer end portion of the counterboring tool; and the invention States of America, residing at Northampton, in the county of furthermore consists in certain subordinate constructions and combinations of parts all substantially as will hereinafter fully appear and be set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the improved machine with the combined barrel and case of the fire-arm indicated as in its position relatively thereto to have the counterboring operation performed at the inner orifice of the barrel. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line 2--2, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are plan and side views of the tool. Fig. 5 is a face and sectional view of the integrally formed pistol casing and barrel.
In the drawings A represents an upright, or stand, having the foot-plate, a, through which to immovablybolt it upon a bench or other support. This stand'has formed on, or secured to, its side the inwardly extended boss-like part, b, to form the rest for the easing, a, of the fire-arm. The side of the standard has the vertical dovetail slide-way, d, therein next within the said boss-like rest, I), in which plays the slide, B, with which slide engages, for its reciprocatorymovement, the hand-lever,f, which is intermediately pivoted at g, onethe stand,its engagement being by its inner arm, f within an angular opening, 2', in the edge of the slide. near its upper end the transversely projected horizontal stud, h, with "the vertical socket, 72, transversely of itsaxis for the reception of the cylindrical shank, j, of the counterboring tool, 0, which has the desired contour. The said rest is recessed at its central upper portion, as seen at h to permit a play of the stud and the tool carried thereby, of sufficient extent to enable these parts to be withdrawn so far as to bring the outer end of the tool below the inner orifice of the barrel, m 'm'represents a screw to constitute an adjustable abutment for limiting the working advance movement of the tool-carrying slide. The tool mounted in the manner described for its bodily reciprocatory movement has the rotation imparted thereto by means of a shaft, D, properly carried and rotated, which is entered into the barrel at its muzzle end and which has a temporary engagement with the counterboring tool so that the latter must necessarily rotate with the shaft. This engagement between shaft and tool is eitected by forming a squared socket, n, in the end of the tool and constructing the extremity, 0, of the shaft square to fit in said socket, or vice versa.
The annular box-like cases are set upon the rest, I), with the barrel vertically standing. The rotary shaft is let down in and through the barrel to engage the then receded-loweredtool, 0, and the lever, f, is then forced slowly down to impart the feed or lead to the tool which continues until the further axial movement is prevented by the abutment, m, whereupon the tool is caused to retreat and the casing and barrel with the latter now sufficiently counterbored, is withdrawn from the machine.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a mechanism of the character described, in combination, a part against which the annular object to be counterbored may rest, or be set, the tool adapted to have a location within the annular object and to have its working extremity entered in the inner end of the radial bore of said object, a carrier for the tool with which the latter has a rotary engagement and which is movable to advance the tool into the bore of the work, and a power-shaft entered from the outer end of the bored work therewithin to an engagement With the outer end portion of the tool, substantially as described.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with the stand having the slide'way and slide with the stud, h, having the transverse journal socket, 7L2, the rest, Z), projecting from the side of the stand and having the recess, b and adapted to atford a steadying support for the annular and radially bored work, the counterbore tool rotatably supported by the said stud of the slide, means for imparting the reciprocatory movement to the slide and the rotating shaft to be entered through the outer end of the radially bored work and having a temporary engagement with the outer end of said tool, substantially as described.
8. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with the stand having the slide-way and the adjustable abutment, on, and the rest, I), projecting from the side thereof, provided with the recess, b and adapted to afford a stcadying support for the annular and radially bored work, of the slide movable in said slide-way and provided with the stud having the transverse socket, 7L2, the counterbore tool rotatably supported by the said stud, the lever for imparting a reciprocatory movement to the slide and the rotating shaft to be entered through the outer end of the radially bored work and having a temporary engagement with the outer end of said tool for causing the rotation of the latter, substantially as described.
