Description

(No Model.)
0. OLSON. SWITCH ATTACHMENT.
No. 530,448. Patented Dec. 4, 1894.
CHARLES OLSON, OF
PATENT. OFFICE.
oAsNovIA, MICHIGAN.
" SWITCH ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 1? atent No. 530,448, dated December 4, 1894.
Application filed June 9. 1894- Serial No- 514.0'76L (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES OLSON, acitizen f the United States of America, residing at Oasnovia, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is an attachment for.
switch rods or bars and the object of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be secured to the switch'rod and project beneath the rail to engage with the split rail whereby the latter will be held firmly in place in the event of the breakage of the switch bar at its point of junction with'the rail, or the loosening of the bolts, thus preventing accidents due to the accidental misplacement of the switch.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a track and switch showing myattachment in place. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4;4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings A, A represent the main rails, and 8-13 represent the split rails, while 0 represents the switch rod connected with the split rail, and O the rod, or continuation of the switch bar, which connects the two split rails. These parts are of the ordinary or any desired construction and form no part of my present invention. 7
My attachment for this switch comprises a main portion D adapted to rest upon the rod and having a forked portion, and a suitable clip E, for connection with the rod. The clip E, is simply an open clip adapted to stride the switch rod and provided with a vertical opening through which passes a key 6, which engages with one of a series of notches e in the side of the switch bar, whereby it maybe held in any desired position thereon. This clip is provided preferably with two laterally projecting ears or lugs e" between which is pivoted the main portion D. This main portion has an upward swell d, to clear the joint usually provided in the switch rod at that point and terminates in two prongs or fingers d adapted to lie one upon each side of the rod. These fingers extend beneath the main rail and are provided with upwardly curved hooked ends d" which engage with the flange of the split rail.
It will thus be seen from the application of the device as above described that should the switch rod break in proximity to the rail, as it is sometimes likely to do under the jar and strain, my attachment will still hold the split rail in proximity to the main rail and will thus prevent its displacement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is An attachment for switches comprising a clip for attachment to the switch rod, and a bifurcated portion pivotally connected thereto, said bifurcated portion projecting under the main rail and having hooked ends engaging the.split rail, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES OLSON.
