SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,471, dated November 20, 1894.
Application filed January 11, 1894. Serial No. 496,517. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FALooNER B. AREN- DELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salisbury, in the county of Rowan and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of filters wherein the water to be filtered is allowed to pass through a filtering agency, with or without the application of any additional force; and it consists in certain improved features of construction and combina tions of parts whereby the general efficacy of the device is increased, all of which will now be fully described.
The primary object contemplated by my invention is to produce a filter which may be more readily cleaned from time to time, thus ridding it of refuse matter which is known to accumulate in such appliances.
A further object, and one closely associated with the first, is to make the filter more effective in operation, and at the same time so that thecleaningmechanism will notinterfere with the operation of the filtering devices.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a detailed description of the device: Figure 1, represents a vertical section taken through the complete arrangement, and Fig. 2, a sectional view showing in elevated perspective the internal parts.
The reference letter A, indicates a cylindrical body portion formed preferably of sheet metal. Entering the body portion A, at its upper end is the inlet or supply nozzle A, which is perforated so as to effect a regular distribution of the water, and which is connected to the main supply pipe at. The pipe a extends horizontally across the upper end of the body A, and on each side of the nozzle A, stop cocks a a. being provided and located on either side of the nozzle A whereby either section of the pipe may be taken out of Y communication with the nozzle.
To the right of the nozzle A the pipe a, after extending horizontally to the edge of the body, turns downwardly and extends parallel with the bodys vertical side, until the bottom of the latter is reached, whereupon it proceeds to the water source. On the left of the nozzle A the pipe a extends to the edge of the body, from whence it proceeds in any convenient direction, its purpose being to carryoff the water used in cleaning the filter. Consequently the terminalof this pipe is immaterial.
Formed in the body A, at a point near its base is a flange or bossed opening B, into which opening the pipe B is iminovably secured. The pipe B extends from the openingB horizontally into the body of the filter and to a point near the side opposite the opening B. Formed throughout the pipe B is a series of perforations which admit the passage of water through the pipe, and the outer side of the pipe is wrapped with a brass or copper sieve 'b which serves to assist in the filtering process and to protect the pipe from the materials used in filtering. This will appear at length hereinafter.
Adapted to be screwed into the pipe B is a second perforated pipe I), which extends within the first pipe and very nearly its entire length. This latter pipe is wrapped with flannel or other yarn fabric b the flannel being arranged on its outer side and of such a quantity as to nearly fill the space between the two pipes. Arranged within the pipe 1) is a bulk of charcoal O, which assists in the filtering operation.
Arranged at the opening B and in communication with the pipe Z), is an outlet noz zle G, provided with a valve or faucet C and with an offset 0. This latter device, 0, is provided with a coupling 0 adapted to removably connect the offset and the pipe D. The office of this pipe D is to conduct the filtered water through the building, or to any place where it may be required.
The letter (1 indicates a perforated tube or pipe, arranged at the base of the body A, and projecting upwardly from said base to a point a slight distance below the pipe B. Here the pipe d branches horizontally in two direc tions, the branches extending at right angles to the longitudinal extent of the pipe B, and terminating at points beyond the sides of said pipe. Arising from the T-ends d, of
the branches of the pipe d, are the vertical tubes E, which are four in number, two for each branch of the pipe (1, and the entire system, pipes E and branches of the pipe (1, is perforated so as to admit the passage of water through them The vertical pipes E extend up, two on each side of the pipe B, to a point midway the vertical extent of the body A, and their purpose,together with the pipe at and itsbranches, is to admit and distribute the stream of cleansing water. The pipe 11 communicates with the external pipe e, which in turn is connected to the supply pipe at, and by which means the water is conducted to the system of perforated pipes just described.
A valve 6' is provided for the pipe 0, and by means of said valve the flow of water through the piper. is controlled. Connected to the pipe 6 at a point directly below the pipe 01 is a drain or waste nozzle E, which is provided with a stop cock F, by which the flow of water therethrough may be allowed or suppressed at will.
By means of the nozzle, F, the water may be drained from the filter, as will be necessary where there is danger of freezing. Arranged within the body A and occupying all of the space between the base and a point just above the upper ends of the pipes E, is a layer of filtering material g. This consists of equal portions of sand and iron filings commingled with each other and packed until the proper degree of density has been attained. This compound of filtering material is made to fill every unoccupied part of the body A, within the space before designated, so that it will be impossible for water to pass through the filter without being subjected to its action.
To filter water with my invention the valves e and a are closed and valve a opened. The stream of water is then turned on, and allowed to pass through the pipe (.t and nozzle A and into the filter on top of the filtering material g. The stream of water through the pipe a should be of a volume commensurate with the capacity of the filter, so that the amount of water fed to the device will be equal to that emitted by the nozzle 0 and the distributing pipe D. This condition will exist when the filter is being used continually and when a steady stream of water is passing through it, but when it is simply used at intervals it will be necessary to check the flow of water through the pipe at by means of the cook 0,, whenever the space above the filtering material 9 is filled with water. After entering the body A, the water percolates by gravity down to the pipe B, which it enters, and after proceeding through the pipe I) and its attachments is ready to be drawn off by the nozzle 0 or distributing pipe D. Thus it will be seen that the water will, after being submitted to the action of those various filtering agencies, be relieved of sediment in a superior manner, and greatly purified.
When it is desired to clean the filter the valves a and C are closed and the valve e opened. I The stream of water through the pipe is then turned on and the water proceeds to the body A, via the pipe (2 and passes into the same through the perforated pipes E. From hence it proceeds to the upper portion of the body, and when this is filled the water passes out by way of the nozzle A into the upper portion of the pipe on. Here the water passes the valve a and proceeds to the waste as has been before explained. By this means the filter and all of its parts are thoroughly cleaned and relieved of all objectionable accumulations, and the filtering material is prevented from passing out with the waste by means of the perforations in the nozzle A. After the filter has been sulfi- *ciently cleaned the order of the valves isreversed and the stream introduced as before described, at which time the filtering material will settle to its normal condition, and the apparatus be ready for use as a filter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. A filter comprising a body having an outlet opening, a perforated tube permanently located within and attached to the filter body and surrounding the said outlet opening, a second perforated tube removably inserted in the first tube through the said outlet opening and normally closing the latter and provided at its outer end with a fancet, a filtering medium within and exterior to the said inner perforated tube, substantially as described.
2. A filter comprising a body having an outlet opening provided with a boss which is internally threaded, a perforated tube carried by and supported upon the boss, a second perforated tube having a faucet and provided with a threaded portion by means of which it is removably attached to the said boss, filtering material within the second perforated tube and a surrounding filtering medium of sheet material, substantially as set forth.
3. A filter comprising abody,an inlet opening at the upper portion, a waste pipe con1- municating with the lower portion, a second waste pipe connected with the inlet opening,
a supply pipe connected with the said inlet opening and with the two waste pipes, a perforated tube having a discharge nozzle disposed in the lower portion of the body, a vertical series of perforated tubes arranged among the filtering material in the body and extending from the bottom to within a short distance from the top of the said filtering material, and having connection with the supply pipe, and controlling valves for the several pipes, substantially as described.
