SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,517, dated October 30,1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Can- Opener and Vegetable-Parer and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to compound tools for household or kitchen use, comprises a canopener, a corer and a potato masher or lemon squeezer and has for its object certain improvements in construction which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved compound tool; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section with the fillingpiece of the handle removed; Fig. 3, aside elevation of the filling-piece detached, and Fig. 4, a cross section on an enlarged scale.

Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the 'handle'of the tool which is tubular, has a portion or about one-half thereof cut away at a to form a passage for the removal of the core of an apple or other like fruit; and on the outerend of the handle is an angular cutting edge or corer b, the incline or bevel of the cutting edge being on the inside and the continuity of the cutting edge being formed by the portion 0 of the handle, and at the front end of the haudle is a socket cl to receive the end of the filling-piece B. The filling-piece is designed to compensate for the portion of themetal handle A which has been cut away to remove the core as described and to form nearly a complete cylinder for the grasp of the hand of the user when the handle is being used. The filling piece is of wood and is provided with a head 6 which forms a seat for the hand in pressing the point of the can openerthrough the head of a can and also serves as a potato masher ora lemon squeezer when detached from the handle.

The inside of the handle is preferably so slightly tapered so that the core which has been severed from the fruit by the cutting edge or corer b will not wedge itself between the walls of the handle.

From the handle A extends the bar f of the tool, on the end of which is the point g of a can opener, and in the slot h in the bar is a block or head i by which the cutter 7c of the can-openeris adjustably secured between the sides of the bar f by a screw 1 and nut m. When not in use the cutter 7c is housed in the seat or arbor n adjacent to the handle which seat is of greater depth than the length of the cutter to protect the hand of the user; the arbor being formed by the inwardly extending sides 0 o of the barf.

The parer 0 consists of a knife which may be attached to either side of the bar f to form .a right or left hand parer, and may be secured to the bar by riveting, but is preferably detachably' secured by screws 19, 19, so that the parer may be removed to sharpen it.

The handle A and the barf are of one continuous piece of cast metal, the interior of the handle and the slot h being formed by suitable cores used in the molders? art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what lclaim is- 1. A compound tool provided with a bar having a point at its end, a longitudinal slot in the bar, a cutter adjustable in the slot and a seat of greater depth than the length of the cutter at the inner end of the slot to protect the hand of the user.

2. A compound tool comprising a canopener having an adjustable cutter, aseat at the inner end of the handle of greater depth than the length of the cutter to protect the hand of the user and a parer secured to one side of the bar of the can-opener.
