Ji il, Mac/S gua hl UNITED STATES EDUARD VON KILANYI, OF BUDA-PESTH, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.-
PATENT QEE'ICE.
APPARATUS FOR DISPLAYING TABLEAUX VIVANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,373, dated October 30, 1894.
Application led April 19, 18 94.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EDUARD voN KILANYI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of Buda-Pesth, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Displaying Tableaux Vivant, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates to apparatus for displaying living pictures and is an improvement on that filed by me March 29, 1894, Serial No. 505,625.
In the accompanying drawings which embody my invention Figure 1 is a vertical section of the device. f Fig. 2 is a side view of same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of same. Fig. y 4 is a top vplan view of the lower supporting frame; Fig. 5, an end view, and Fig. 6 a plan view of the upper table and scenic sections, without the central track and moved in a straightline back and forth on the stage track.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be noted that I have substituted for the lower table in the application above referred toa frame A, consisting of pieces suitably bolted or joined together so as to be readily assembled or taken apart and provided with wheels or rollers a journaled in v said frame at suitable intervals apart, said rollers moving upon a detachable track a laid upon the licor of the stage.
The frame A, movable as described, has secured to it a transverse track b, upon which moves a second supporting frame or table B, provided with wheels or rollers h', moving upon said track. This table has secured to it on its top acircular track C upon which move the wheels d of the scene supporting table D. This latter table consists of sections (preferably four or more), each independent of the other but suitably joined together, as will be hereinafter explained. The sections are of box form to give strength and in ad- 'dition to provide a tank or tanks G for water effects. The four sections as here shown (Fig. 3) are joined together by a four arm cross plate H bolted to the under side of the sections as shown at i, and at the center is Serial No. 508,143. (No model.)
against which rest the scenic back grounds E.
These vstays are removably attached to the table. The scenic back grounds are hinged together so as to be readily and quickly detached and folded up. This construction enables me to place the apparatus in its desired position on the stage easily and quickly, and having arrived at the proper position at the rear and near to the frame F has a reciprocal motion and a motion of translation relative to said frame, that is to say, the front of each section must be very near the edge of the frame so as to hide the table sections and make the illusions complete. Howtable must be run back so as to clear the edges of the frame, and this is done by moving it back and forth on track b by means of a suitable lever, or in any other mechanical way.v
Having drawn the table back on its track until arrested by the stops b2 at the ends of track b, these stops being placed at a distance just' enough to clear the edge of the picture frame and permit the table to be revolved, hence it is shown that the table D has a combined motion of translation and rotation. The picture frame F has an interior mat f, about which is arranged a series of lights g, which light up by reflection the back ground E with the posed figures.
The track C is preferably hinged as shown at c, so as to be readily folded for transportation, and the several parts of the table or' then revolved to bring into View picture No.w 2. Then the back ground E of No. l is removed and back ground of picture 5 with its figurants substituted. This motion of translation and rotation is continued until all the pictures have been displayed and the appara` tus is then moved back on its track, the track removed, and the stage is clear for any other part of the play.
In some theaters the stage may be too narrow to revolve the scene table, and in this instace the circular track may be dispensed with and the scene sections be arranged in a straight line and moved back and forth on the lower frame A or stage track a. The
back grounds Will be removably arranged and the operation of setting and remounting the pictures will be the same as before described. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an apparatus of the nature described,
a movable platform in combination with a table supported by and movable thereon, and a scene supporting table divided into independent sections and rotatable on said table.
2. The combination with the movable frame A of the table B moved laterally thereon, and a sectional table D rotating on table B, said table D having one or more Water compartments.
3. The combination With the laterally moving framcA and table B of a table 'D pivotally mounted and rotatable on table B, said table D having removable back grounds E and supports e.
Signed at Newr York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 16th day of April, A. D. 189i.
