Description

(No Model.) 4
J. B. KENISON 8v F. BURK. STAGING BRACKET.
No. 528,169. Patented Oo. .30, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN B. KENISQNl AND MICHAEL F. BURK, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
STAGING-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,169, dated October 30, 1894.
Application led January 16, 1894. Serial No. 497,033. (No model.)
`and is intended as an improvement upon the staging bracket shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 511,721,`
dated December 26, 1893. In the patent referred to a thin fiat end portion was provided at the upper end of the wall plate having several keyhole slots or openings through which the nails for securing the bracket to the roof were driven, and after a course of shingles had been laid covering said end portion, the bracket was removed by forcing it upward a short distance, and then raising it from the securing nails.
In practice We find that after a course of shingles has been laid, covering said end portion, that there is great liability of forcing the bracket up too far, and as a result the heads of the nails still act to hold the bracket.
Our present invention is intended to obviate this difficulty, and to eftectually do so we have provided a guide or guides, and a short distance below it alimiting stop, the distance between the two being substantially equal to the distance between the end of the slot of the keyhole opening and the center of the circular portion of said opening, and by placing the bracket with the guide upon the line drawn for the butts of the shingles, we can, after a course of shingles has been laid, force up the bracket until the limiting stop strikes the butts of the shingles, at which time the securing nails will occupy a position `at the center of the circular opening of the keyhole' slots. This guide is herein termed the buttline guide.
Figure 1, shows in perspective view a staging bracket embodying this invention; Fig.
2, an enlarged detail showing the upper end portion of the wall plate with the securing :nails in their proper position to hold the bracket, the guide being upon the butt-line; Fig. 3, a similar detail showing the bracket forced up so that the limiting stop strikes the butts of the shingles, at which time the securing nails will occupy a position at the center of the circular portion of the keyhole slots.
The wall plate ct having its side edges a', upturned, and also `having a thin dat upper end portion a2, provided with keyhole sloits 5, the sole plate b pivotally connected to said wall plate at 2, and the brace rod c,- pivotally connected at its lower end at 3, to the wall plate, are all substantially as shown and described in the patent referred to.
Herein the end portion a2, is providedat one or both sides with a notch 6, so located `that when the bracket is placed in position said notch or notches will register with the usual butt-line drawn for the butts of a course of shingles.
The side edges a are formed at the points 7 adjoining the end portion a2 to serve as limiting stops, the distance between the notches or butt-line guides, and the limiting stops being substantially equal to the distance between the ends of the slots of the openings 5 and the centers ot the circular portions thereof.
In using the bracket, it is placed upon the roof or previous row of shingles in such manner that the butt-line guides register Withthe butt-line drawn for the next course of shingles, and after said vcourse of shingles has been laid, covering the end portion a2, by forcing the bracket upward until the liniiting stop strikes the butts of the shingles so laid, it will be found that the securing nails will occupy a position at the center of the circular portions of the keyhole slots, and by raising the end portion a2, the bracket may be readily removed,wi thout disturbing the securing nails.
We claiml In a staging bracket, the combination ot' a names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
