B. GUILBERT. PIGKEB MOTION FOR LOO-MS.
M a K m w ,A// m \n/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMOND GUILBERT, OF WOONSOCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
PlCKER-MOTION- FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 527,853, dated October 23, 1894.
Application filed May 14, 1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMOND GUILBERT, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Motions for Looms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nvention, such as will enableothers skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
My invention relates to improvements in that class of picker motions for looms in which a spring is combined with the rocker and the picker staff for retracting the latter and returning it to its normal position after each of its vibrations in the lay; and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a portion of a loom embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a detail, vertical section, and Fig. 3, is a detail, perspective view of the adjustable shoe removed.
Referring by letter to said drawings:A, indicates the lay or lay-beam of a loom; B, indicates the lay shaft; C, indicates the rocker bed; D, indicates the rocker, and E, indicates the picker staff, all of which may be of the usual construction.
The rocker bedG, is provided upon its under side with the usual spring-actuated roll F, (better illustrated in Fig. 2,) and to this roll is connected the leather strap G, through the medium of which the rocker bed and the lay shaft are connected with the picker stafi.
' This strap G, is carried upthrough the usual openings at, b, in the rocker bed and the rocker, and it is held against the inner side of the picker staff as better shown in Fig. 2, by the connecting bolt H, and the interposed block I, and shoe J, through which the bolt passes as shown. The interposed block I, is preferably provided with side Walls as 0,, adapted to prevent lateral displacement of the strap G, and shoe J, and the said shoe J, which is preferably formed of metal, has its Serial No. 511,184.; (no mas.)
lower end curved as shown at d, to prevent unnecessary frictional wear of the strap G, and also has a longitudinal slot e, for the passage of the bolt H, whereby it will be seen that it may be adjusted vertically by simply loosening the nut f, on said bolt H.
- The shoe J, permits of the strap G, being connected in a strong and durable manner to the back or inner side of the picker staff, which is desirable since it enables the lay shaft toimpart a uniform motion to the rocker D, and consequently to the shaft. The said shoe J, being adjustable also enables the weaver to regulate the tension on the springactuated roll F; it being simply, necessary when it is desired to decrease the tension, to raise the shoe, while to increase the tension, the shoe should be lowered. When the tension on the spring is decreased the resistance which the staff offers to the shuttle will be increased, and when the tension on the spring is increased, the resistance to the shuttle will be correspondingly reduced.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my improved shoe adds but little to the cost of the ordinary mechanism and that it permits of the strap G, being connected to the back or inner side of the stat? and enables the weaver to readily regulate the tension on the spring for the purpose stated.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a picker motion for looms, the combination of a lay'sh'aft provided with a rocker bed, a picker staff, a rocker bearing on the rocker bed, an adjustable shoe J, having a longitudinal slot and connected to the inner side or back of the picker staff, a tension device, a strap connected with the rocker bed and said tension device and interposed between the shoe and the picker staif and a connecting bolt taking through the rocker, the stafl, the strap, and the slot of the shoe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. In a picker motion for looms, the combination of a lay shaft, a rocker bed connected to said lay shaft and carryinga springactuated roller, a picker staff, a rocker bearing on the rocker bed, an adjustable shoe J,
having a longitudinal slot and connected to In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the inner side or back of the picker staff, a presence of two witnesses. strap connected to the roller on the rocker 4 bed and interposed between the shoe and the EDMOND GUILBERT 5 picker staff, and a connecting bolt taking Vitnesses:
through the rocker, the staff, the strap, and GEO. W. SPAULDING,
the slot of the shoe, substantially as specified. CAROLINE R. MASON.
