NITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZALMON c. SHOLES, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE REMINGTON- SHOLES TYPEWRITER COMPANY, OF ILLINOIS.
TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,544, dated October 16, 1894.
Application filed March 5, 1894. S ial No. 502,370. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ZALMON G. SHOLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to platen carriages of type writers, to the ways upon which said carriages reciprocate, and to mechanism for guiding the inking ribbon.
The object of the invention is to produce a platen carriage, ways for said carriage, and guides for the inking ribbon, all of which may be readily removed from and replaced upon the machine, to the end that access may be readily had to the parts of the machine located beneath the carriage.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of a portion of a type Writer embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in line a-b of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a vertical section in line ac of Fig. l.
' A is the upper portion of the frame of the machine. This may be of any well known form.
A is the central opening through which the well known type bars rise to reach the platen.
A ,A are openings in said frame through which the inking ribbon, A passes.
A A are parallel dove-tail grooves extending from the front of the upper portion 1 of the frame, A, rear ward through the latter almost to the rear of said frame. B, B, are dove tail bars accurately fitted into said grooves, but loosely enough to permit longitudinal reciprocation therein. At any convenient point in each of said bars a binding screw, B, extends through'said bar and is adapted to be pressed against the bottom of the groove, A in which said bar is located.
By means of said screws, said bars may be immovably bound in said grooves.
O O are parallel rails each extending from one of the bars,.B, to the other and having their ends secured to said bars by any suitable means. For this purpose,I prefer to apply a short cross piece, 0, at each end of said rail between the latter and the adjacent bar, and attach said cross pieces to said bar by means of screws, 0.
D is the platen carriage. This is arranged to reciprocate upon the rails, O, in any suitable manner. The drawings show the opposing faces of said rails provided with tongues, 0 extending into grooves, d, in the edges of the carriage.
I deem it unnecessary to illustrate and describe the manner of applying the platen to the carriage, for this is well understood by those familiar with this art.
E E are ribbon guides extending from one rail, 0, to the other at each side of the center of the opening, A. Said guides extend beneath the carriage, D, and are attached rigidly to the said rails, C. To provide for the release of the ribbon when the carriage rails are removed, I have provided for temporarily forming a gap at the middle of each of said supports. To this end each of said supports consists of two rods, E, approaching each other from the opposite side rails and a loose sleeve, E surrounding said rods and adapted to be moved longitudinally upon said rods to uncover the gap between the adjacent ends of said rods. When the carriage rails are to be removed, the sleeves, E
are slipped toward one of the rails untilsaid gap is exposed, and then the inking ribbon is moved downward through said gaps. Then said guides and said rails are free to be lifted away Iv claim as my invention- 1. In a typewriter, the combination with the frame, A, of bars, B, detachably secured to said frame, rails, G, secured to said bars, and a platen carriage, D, and separable ribbon-supports applied to said rails, substantially as described.
2. In a type-writer, the combination with in presence of two Witnesses, this 26th day of February, in the year 1894- ZALMON G. SHOLES.
