SANDING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,437, dated October 16, 1894.

Be it known that I, JAMES MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Sand-Distributers for Street-Cars, of which the following is a description.

My invention has relation to sand, gravel, or abradant materialdistributers, such as are adapted to be used upon street cars, and my object is to provide a device of thischaracter which will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, light and durable in use, and readily operated. 9

In the drawings, Figure 1, is a side view of my device. Fig. 2, is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view thereof.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a suitably constructed sand reservoir, from which the sand, gravel, or other abradant material may be fed to the hopper 2 of the distributor, which is attached to the platform means of screws secured to anges 4. The bottom 5 of the hopper is hinged at 6 and is secured by rivets to an operating arm 7,whose upper portion is provided with extensions 8, 8, which are pivotally connected to rods, 9, 9. Secured to the sides of the hopper 2, are angle pieces 10, 10, provided with bearing blocks l1, 11. Through openings in iianges 10, 10,`and the bearing blocks 11, 11, pass therods `9, 9, which are provided at their upper extremities with bearing blocks 12,12, secured against displacement by bolts 13 13 Secured to each bearing block 1l and 12 arethe extremities of spiral springs 14,14, which surround rods 9, 9, and exertan upward pressure upon the angle pieces 10, 10, thereby serving to keep the bottom 5 of the hopper in position. The bottom of the hop per is provided with a curved agitator 15,

having an arrow head 16 designed to disturb the sand when the bottom is drawn down, thereby assisting in distributing the sand should it from any reason become stuck in the hopper. u

17 indicates a lever rod which may be con'- nected with any well known form of mechanism adapted to be operated by foot or hand for the purpose of distributing the sand on the track. By drawing upon the lever-rod 17, the arm 7 will be moved, causing the bottom of the hopper to be dropped, thereby permitting the escape of the sand, or abradant material. As soon as the pressure is removed from lever-rod 17 the spiral springs 14, 14, will exert themselves causing the bottom of the hopper to be brought immediately into its normal closed position.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A` sand distributer comprising a sand reservoir, a hopper connected therewith, a hinged bottom in said hopper, spring actuated rods working in bearing blocks located on the side of said hopper, and pivotal connections between the hinged bottom and said rods.

2. A sand distributer comprising a sand reservoir, a hopper having a hinged bottom, an operating arm secured to said bottom and provided with extensions, and spring controlled rods pivotally connected to said ex` tensions, whereby the bottom is held in a closed position.
