UNITEDA STATES PATENT OFFICE.
sToNEwALL J. ooNKwRIeHT, or WINoHEsTER, KENTUCKY.
LAND-MARKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,362, dated October 9, 1894.
Application filed December 14, 1393. Serial No. 493,622. (No model.)
Zo all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STONEWALL J. CoNK# WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winchester, in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Land-Markers,
i of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention has for its object to provide a new and improved laterally adjustable machine adapted to mark rows of any width for planting or other purposes. j
To accomplish this object my invention consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan View partly in section of my improved machine for marking off rows of any width for planting corn or for other purposes, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken vonthe line 3 3 Fig. l.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein lhe numeral l indicates an axle frame comprlsing a boxing or housing 6, and lengthwise adjustable beams 5 arranged therein,"
and of such construction that the beams may be projected or drawn out laterally and locked or fastened at any desired point of adjustment through the medium of fastening pins 7 which pass down through the boxing or `housing into the beams. The boxing or housing is provided at or near its center with a support 4 carrying a driv-ers seat; and upon the outer or projecting extremities of the beams 5 are mounted rearwardly projecting arms or brackets 8, arranged substantially at right angles with the longitudinal lines of the beams, andforming supports for the journals, or axles 9, of the ground wheels 10, which may be of any preferred construction. It will be seen that as the beams 5 are laterally adjustable in the lines of the length of the said beams, the ground wheels may be readily arranged at greater or less distances from each other to vary the width of the ma-` chine as a whole.
The brackets 8 are provided with eyes, or
`any suitable form of j ournal-bearings for supporting a lengthwise adjustable marker-head composed of two overlapping beams, or strips 26 having journal bearings 27 formed, or mounted upon brackets 2S, and arranged in the eyes or journal bearings of the brackets S. The overlapping beams 26 are connected by means of an intermediate bracket 30, mounted rigidly upon onelbeam and surrounding the other beam, a pin or bolt 3l being inserted through the bracket and through both beams. By means of this sliding adjustment of one beam upon the other, the journals 27 maybe engaged with the eyes or bearings in the bracket 8 which are mounted upon the ends of the bracket-supports 5. Projecting rearwardly and downwardly from the overlapping beams 26, are row-markers 32 which are mounted upon the extremities of elastic strips 33, and upon the intermediate bracket 30 is formed, or mounted, a side bracket 34 to afford an attachment for the end of the link 22, which connects with a lever 20. The lever 2O is pivoted to the -boxing 6, in which the beams 5 are movable lengthwise, and is connected with the marker-head by link 22, pivoted at one end to the lever and at the other end to the bracket 34, whereby the markerhead and markers can be readily raised or lowered by operating the lever, while the width of the machine, as a whole, can be ,changed to suit the conditions required.
Obviously the lateral adjustment of the machine varies the distance apart of the rowmarkers, and therefore rows of any required width can be laid out.
I do not herein broadly claim the combination `with a boxing or housing to which draft devices are connected, of independent axles adjustable lengthwise in the boxing or housing, and each having at one end portion a wheel-spindle and a radially projecting arm provided with a bearing for receiving a journal or stud on the implement to be attached, as such is claimed in a separate application for patent filed by me May 26, 1894, Serial No. 512,527. l
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a lengthwise eX- IOO tensible wheeled axle, of rearwardly extend` ing brackets secured to the said axle and having journal bearings, a swinging, lengthwise extensible marker head having journals mounted in the journal bearings of the brackets, row-markers carried-on and adj usted tov and from one another by the lengthwise adjustment of the marker-head, and'means for swinging the marker-head to raise or lower the row-markers, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a lengthwise extensible wheeled axle, of rearwardly extending brackets secured to the said axle and having journal bearings, a swinging, lengthwise extensible marker-head pivotally mounted on the brackets, row-markers carried on and adj usted to and from one another by the lengthwise adjustment of the marker head, a piv oted lever, and a link pivotally connecting the lever with the said marker-head, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a boxing or housing, of laterally extensible beams arranged therein and having rearwardly extending brackets, means for locking the beams at'any desired point, a laterally extensible markerhead having journals supported by the rear` wardly extending brackets, row markers mounted upon the beams and adj usted to and from one another by the movement thereof, a lever pivoted to the boxing or housing, and
a link connecting the lever with the markerhead, substantially as described.
4:'. The combination with a boxing or housing, of laterally extensible beams having rearwardly projecting brackets carrying the journals of the ground wheels, laterally extensible overlapping beams or strips pivotaliy mounted in said brackets and having support in an intermediate bracket, and rowmarkers secured to the pivotally mounted beams or strips, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a boxing or hous-l STONE WALL J. CONKWRIGHT.
