Be it known that we, GIDEON KLINEFETTER and JONATHAN WHIFFLE NASH, citizens of the United States, residing at Nortonville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Pruning-Tools; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exvact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain newand useful improvements in that class of pruning implements which are designed for pruning branches growing at a considerable distance from the'gronnd, without necessitating the use of a ladder, and the invention has for its object to improve upon the construction of this class of appliances and to provide in connection with a chisel blade carried by asuitable supporting device or pole, of means whereby the chisel edge may be forced suddenly against the branch to be severed.

A further object of the present invention consists in pivoting to the face of the chisel blade a shear or cutting blade for use in severing smaller branches or twigs and in connecting the long arm of said shearing blade with the sliding weighted handle, whereby by a downward movement of the said handle the blade of the shear will be closed.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel com'a bination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a partof this specilication, and in which drawings- I Figure l is a perspective view of a pruningim'plementembodying ourimprovements. Fig. 2, .is a longitudinal section of the same.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter-, A designates a pole which may be constructed ot' either wood or metal, but preferably of wood and is of about the diameter of 'an ordinary rake handle. F is a shear blade which is provided with the usual cutting edge F. This shear blade is pivoted to the face of the chisel blade, the pivotal point being near the lower end of the chisel blade, and a lateral arm or lever G is provided, to the outer end -of which is attached one end of a short chain H the opposite end of said chain being attached to one endk of a rod I the opposite end of which is attached to the slidingweighted handle D.

The operation of the device will be readily understood. When a large branch is to be cut, the cutting edge o"l the chisel is placed in contact with the limb. A sudden upward movement of the weighted handle will serve to impart a sudden blow to the chisel which will result in severing the limb. It will be seen thata reverse movement of theweighted handlewill serve to close the cutting shear, thus providing a means for severing smaller limbs and twigs.
