Description

(No Model.)
T. H. ,BENNINGER. BAR LOOK FOR nouns.
No. 527,104. Patented Oct. 9, 1894.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES P TENT. OFFICE.
TONY H. BENNINGER; OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
BAARI-LOCK FoR ooons.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,104, dated October 9, 1894.
' Application filed December 4.13%. serial No. 492,800. on model.)
To all whom it may concern): Be it known that I, ToNYH. BENNINGER, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bar-Locks; of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a'full, clear, and exact description. v
This invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in door-bars, and consists in certain features of detail, construction, andoperation of parts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings similar letters of 1 reference denote corresponding parts in'all views, wherein- 1 Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of doors from the interior, fitted with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the locking-devices shown in Fig. 1. I Fig. 3 is an edge view of the locking means. Fig. 4 is a sectional view. of the bar 'B and hook-shaped hanger -H looking at it from the left, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detached view of the.
locking bar and its depending hanger H'.
Referring to the drawings-A A are two doors of ordinary construction, to the frame of which are secured two staples "eeof ordinary form adapted to hold the bar B- in position and resist inward strain on the doors. Secured to one door is a plate A- or block cast solid with the face plate A'- witha space between in which may be pivotally held thedrum d. This drum dis pivotally supported on a spindle P- which is provided at its outer end with an angular portion adapted to receive a key to turn it and with it the drum -clcarried therewith. Cast integral with the plate A. is a lug or stop S- which presents a flat,
latter portion is an oblong opening extending into the interior'tothe drum d-which is andthe latter of which acts as a stop forthe casting H to prevent the bar passing a horizontal plane in the staples e-- e-.
Secured to. the bar 'B'- is a casting H which has a hook-shaped extension -H", and in the inner. side of the circle described by the extension H- is a recess D: which recess D fits over the stud D- on'the'drum cZ-- so as to support the bar B in position on the drum when required.
Within the lower portion H' as shown in Fig. 5 isan oblong opening-X -r (shown in Fig. 4)'which is so located with relation to the stud D that it will register with the corresponding oblong opening X in the casting A' when the bar -B is in a horizontal position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and in the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Secured on the adjoining door is a lock L from which may be projected a bolt' gwhen desired so that the door maybe locked without the bar Bin case it is desired to do so. i
The operation of my bar-lock is as follows: The parts being formed as shown and described it willbe apparent that the hooked portion H' of the casting H- may be fitted over the drum -dwith the stud -D- fitting into the recess D-so as to hold the bar Bin a vertical position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, in which case the two stops -S-s will act as abutments respectively for the bar B- and the casting -H so as to prevent said bar dropping off in case-of sudden jar. The spindle P, projects through the door to the exterior, where it may be engaged by any ordinary key and rotated as desired, carrying with it the drum '-d and the bar B- to a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1, the ends entering the staples -e-e-. At the point where the bar reaches .a horizontal position the two oblong openings XX'- will come into coincidence and the bolt qof the lock "L may be projected therethrough thus securing the parts in position against rotation until the bolt -g is retracted into the lock L.
Thus it will be seen that the operation of 1. A bar-lock for doors consisting of aibasepiece with bolt opening therein, a pivoted drum supported in said base-piece, a detachable rocking-bar, a hooked support therefor adapted to be carried on said drum, and a bolt opening in said hooked piece adapted to register with the bolt opening in the base piecewhen the bar is in ahorizontal position.
2. A bar-lock for doors consisting of a base piece with bolt opening therein, a drum revoluble in said base piece, a bar carried from said drum by an attaching hook, a bolt opening therein, and stops on the base piece plate adapted to limit the movement of said bar,
all substantially as specified.
3. A bar-lock for doors consisting of a baseblock, a pivoted drum supported therein,a stud projecting radially from said drum, a door-bar, a hooked support connected thereto adapted to interlock with said projecting stud, a pivotal support for said drum provided with squared end, coinciding boltopenings in said base-block and hooked support and an auxiliary lock supported in such relation to the base-block that its bolt will enter said bolt holes in base-block and hooked support when the bar is in a horizontal posi tion, substantially as shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name,in the presence of twoattesting witnesses, at Louisville,iu the county of Jefferson, in the State of Kentucky, this 30th day of October, 1893.
