UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VVILLIAM HALLOCK, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEXV YORK.
RAC E-COU RS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,482, dated August 14, 1894.
Application filed March 1, 1894:-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAMl-IALLooK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Race- Courses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in race courses for horses, of which the following issuch a full, clear and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object oftheinvention is to form a race course which will reduce the area of ground required for its formation thereby greatly economizing in the matter of cost.
A further object of the invention is the designing of a track by which thehorses when racing may be within close range of the judges as well as the spectators at all times; furthermore, to provide a mile track in which the horses will pass the observers at the grand stand when they have gone half the distance and on their return thus making the exhibition more interesting.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide a mile track by which a race of only half a mile may be started and finished in front of the judges stand.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the various novel details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification wherein I have shown by a plan view a race course disclosing my invention in which characters of reference indicate the several parts.
In the drawing A, denotes the starting point, and the arrows arranged in the course show the direction the horses should take. Starting at A which is the judges stand the horses Serial No. 501,940. (No model.)
continue straight until a course to the left is encountered at B which is followed around the circuit to G and around that portion of the track to D which leads again into A and down past the judges stand.
Assu ming the whole course above described to be a mile, it will be observed that a half mile will have been gone over when G is reached and starting at A and around B to 0 makes a desirable half mile course although it may be preferred to start up the 0 course around byD and down A. Either can be used to advantage as will be apparent.
The track here shown is approximately heart shaped with a portion of the track A passing through the center, which arrangement economize-s not only in the acreage but in the actual work of making and maintaining the track.
That portion of the track above the triangle E can be used for scoring and practice while the triangle itself as well as other ground ad joining the track may be utilized for any desired purpose.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, the system being such that the curves may be variously modified and the sides may be shortened or lengthened, all of which I claim as coming within the scope of the invention herein described and claimed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. An approximately heart shaped race course with a central track substantially as and for the purpose described. 4
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HALLOCK.
