UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. MOTIGHE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO FREDERICK K. FITCH, OF SAME PLACE.
ELECTRIC-RAILWAY POLE-RATCH ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 524,282, dated August '7, 18 94.
Application filed January 23, 1893. Renewed January 22, 1894. Serial No. 497,722. (No model.)
railways for drawing up and holding the spans which support the trolley-wire.
The object of the invention is to construct a ratchet which can be attached directly to a metallic pole while being electrically insulated therefrom.
The invention consists in the combination, with a ratchet-drum, of a carrying yoke therefor, and a cover-box clamped or adapted to be clamped to the pole, theyoke and cover-box being insulated from each other.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a plan, both partly sectional, of my improved pole-ratchet. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the dog.
A represents the pole to which by suitable means, such for example as clip I) and nuts 0, is secured the weather-hood D through its wings e. Across the hood is placed the bolt f, which in assembling the parts passes through the bushing g washers h and the eye 'i of the metal yoke K, the bushing gand washers h being vulcanized fiber or other suitable insulating material. curved as shown and carries at its outer end about on the line of strain a drum L provided with ratchets m. The drum is journaled in the yoke, and preferably in a slot n as shown, for convenience of assembling. On one or The yoke K is' both sides the drum extends out to form the wrench-ends p. A suitably shaped dog, such as shown at r is arranged to engage the ratchets in Winding up the span-wire or cable used to support the trolley-wire.
The construction gives great strength when the hood, yoke and drum are made of, malleableiron,tl1e connection between ratchet and hood is well insulated and the hood protects the insulation against rain and snow or sleet.
The particular form of drum or dog or yoke is not of the essence of my invention, nor is the specific arrangement of the insulation, as all of these may be modified by any one skilled in the art.
I claim as my invention- 1. A metallic pole-ratchet in combination with a metallic clamping device for attachment to the pole, and insulation electrically separating the ratchet from the clamping devlce.
2. A metallic pole-ratchet in combination with a metallic clamping device for attachment to'the pole, insulation electrically separating the said parts, and a weather-hood surrounding the insulating connection.
3. The pole clamp consisting of a ratchetdrum and dog mounted in the curved yoke K, the weather-hood D provided'with means for clamping to a pole and pivotally carrying the yoke K, and suitable insulation electrically separating the hood from the yoke.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 20th day of January, A. D. 1893.
THOMAS J. MCTIGHE.
