NIVTEFDS 1 STATES PATENT OFF- CE.
LUDWIG HIRSCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
OILER FOR B'ICYCLES, 80G.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,614, dated June 19, 1894. Application filed October 9, 1893- Serial No. 487,661- (No model.)
the invention consists of an oiler which is provided with a spout made movable in a stuffing box on the oiler and adapted to be guided on a stationary pin at the interior of the body of the oiler, said spout being provided at its inner end with a funnel-shaped mouth, so as to permit the discharge of the lubricating material from the oiler, when the spout is drawn in outward direction to its full extent, while it prevents the escape of the same when the spout is pushed inwardly over the stationary pin.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical sections of my improved pocket-oiler, showing the spout respectively in a position for closing or opening the oiler. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections of a sewing-machine oiler.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bodyof the pocket-oiler, which is made of circular shape with fiat side-walls, so as to be easily carried in the pocket, and especially adapted for the use of wheelmen, or which is made in conical shape, in the well -known shape of sewing-machine oilers. The body is made of sheet-metal, either one side-wall or the bottom being made flexible, so as to per mit the ejecting of the oil in the body. The body A is provided'with a stationary elongated guide pin a at the interior of the body A, which pin is applied to any suitable point of the oiler, said pin being nearly equal in length with the diameter of the pocket-oiler,
as shown in Fig. 1, or nearly equal in length with the height of the conical oiler, shown in Fig. 3. In the former case, the pin a is attached to a point on the circumference of the body, while in the latter case the pin is attachedv to the center of the bottom of the body. The spout B of the oiler is arranged axially in line with the stationary pin a, but instead of being stationary, it is made to slide in a suitable stuffing-box b that is arranged at a point opposite the point of connection of the stationary pin with the body A. The inner end of the spout B is enlarged so as to form a conical shaped mouth I) which prevents the withdrawing of the spout from the body A, and which permits the tight-seating of the inner end of the spout against the inner end of the stufling-box, so as to prevent any escape of the liquid between the spout and stuffing-box. The outer end of the spout B is provided with a suitable shoulder or other device (Z, by means of which the spout is readily pushed into the body A of the oiler, or pulled outwardly from the same. When the spout Bis pushed into the oiler, the inner end of the same passes readily over the stationary pin a and is guided thereon until the mouth arrives at the opposite point of the body, so as to permit by the seating of the flaring mouth against the bottom of the body and the tight-fitting of the pin into the spout B the reliable'closing of the oiler, so that no discharge of oil from the same is possible.
. When the spout is in the body A, the oiler can be placed in any desired position without discharge or leakage of oil,'so that the soiling of the pockets, clothes or fingers is obviated. When the spout is pushed in the outward direction until its enlarged mouth arrives at the inner end of the stuffing-box, thespout clears the stationary pin a and the oil can be readily ejected from the body through the spout to the outside by pressing on the flexible side-wall or bottom of the oiler in the usual well-known manner. The sliding-spout in connection with the stationary pin can also be arranged in sheet-metal oilcans, in which case they can be readily opened or closed by pulling out or pushing in the spout. It can also be applied to oil-cans, lamp-founts and similar receptacles, the pin has to be supported on a suitable sheet-metal bracket or hanger attached to the stuffingbox, as shownin Fig. 5, but in other respects the construction is the same. i

Having thus described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An oiler, composed of a suitable body, a shifting spout or tube guided in a stuffingbox of the body, an inner elongated stationary guide-pin projecting from the bottom of the oiler in line with the spout to a point near the top of the body, said spout being adapted to be moved inwardly over the pin and seated at its inner end on the bottom of the body, or outwardly so as to clear the same, substantially as set forth.
2. An oiler, composed of a suitable body, an inner elongated stationary guide-pin projecting from the bottom of the oiler to a point forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LUDWIG IIIRSCII.
