ADJUSTABLE' SOCKET-CLAMP FOR SUCKER-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 521,502, dated June 19, 1894.
` Application filed February 12, 1894:. Serial No. 499,932. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may oon/cern,.-
Be it known that we, JOSEPH A. KIDD and GEORGE W. HESS, of Haskins, county of Wood, and State of Ohio, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Socket-Clamps for Sucker-Rods; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which willenable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciication.
Our invention relates to an adjustable socket clamp for sucker rods, and has for its object, to provide a clamp which will be convenlent in attaching and detaching the sucker rod, and which will allow of `lateral movement at the point ot adjustment with the clamp wlthout breakage of the same.
The invention consists in a clamp having a lower threaded end forattachment to the valve or pump mechanism, and a cylindrical upper end slitted longitudinally to receive the lower end of the rod, a screw threaded exterror upon which is run a threaded ferrule to compress the sections upon the rod, and socket sections having a spring extension to 'compensate for lateral strain upon the rod.
The invention further consists in the parts as shown, described and claimed.`
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of the clamp, showing the rod secured there- 1n. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
l designates the socket, comprising the lower solid portion 2, having a screw threaded end 3 and the tubular upper end tslitted longltudinally at 5, to provide a plurality of sections 6, to allow of expansion of the sectlons to receive the end 7 of the rod. c
rlhe exterior ofthe socket is screw threaded for a dlstance along its length, as at 8, and an internally threaded ferrule 9 is run thereon, which as the sections areexpanded the insertion of the rod, draws the sections tightly against the rod, to hold it frictionally in the socket. In order to further secure the rod within the socket, there are ribs lO, formed upon the interior of the sections preferably in staggered order, which, as the sections are drawn closely around the rodfenter the wood by corrugating the same. The upper portions of the sections are of a length to extend above the ferrule and embrace the rod, and serve as spring arms to allow lateral swaying of the rod to a certain extent.
The internally screw threaded ferrule is preferably formed with a plurality of vertical parallel grooves ll, which allow the use of a Spanner wrench in running the ferrule upon the thread.
In operation, to secure the rod in the clamp socket, the rod is inserted therein and the ferrule run upon the sections of the clamp until the rod is tightly clamped thereon.
The clamp has an adj ustability to rods varying in size, and in its use 'the employment of rivets passing through straps and the rod is avoided with the consequent liability of the rivets loosening and working into the pump barrel.
The convenience with which one rod may be substituted for another and the valuable feature of the spring ends of the clamp sections will be apparent to th'ose ordinarily familiar with this class ot devices.
While the attachment described is especially adaptable for use upon sucker rods, it can be used in all character of pumping devices, where a reciprocating rod is employed.
In au adjustable socket clamp for sucker rods, asocket having longitudinal slits and a threaded exterior and athreaded ferrule run JosEPr-i A. KIDD. GEORGE w. HEss.
