VENTILATING AND FURNACE-CHECKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,974, dated June 5, 1894.

Be it known that We, JOHN B. WATSON, of
the city of Toronto, and JOSEPH R. DOUGLAS,
of the city ofOttawa, in the Province of Ontario and Dominionof Canada, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating and Furnace-Checking Devices; and we do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention, which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, relates to devices for ventilating rooms warmed by, or in proximity to, a hot air furnace, water or steam boiler and for controlling or checking said furnace or boiler.
The object of our invention is to provide ready means of changing the air in rooms heated by, or in proximity to, a furnace or boiler and to control and check the fire in said furnace or boiler.
Figurel is a horizontal section through the ashpit of a furnace or boiler, on linecc 00, Figs. 2 and 4, showing our improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation corresponding to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the ashpit mouth, on

Fig. 7 is a similar section of the valve box, showing the valve closed set for checking the draft, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the valve box, corresponding to Fig. 7, parts being broken out.
Hot air furnaces, water and steam boilers, all being for the present purpose essentially alike in construction, are represented by one of the former, A, in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4; A being theashpit and A", Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5, the ashpit mouth with door.
In one side of the ashpit mouth is formed an opening which is covered by one of the open ends of a valve box, B, rectangular in cross section, having its other end connected, by means of pipes or ducts, D, Figs. 1, 2 and 4, to the room or rooms which it is desired to ventilate. In said box is hung, at the top and extending down in the segmental bottom part, b, on an axle, O,which isjournaled in the sides of the box and having its projecting front end provided with a crank c, a plate O forming a valve. This has at its rear edge a sector shaped extension, wing or back, 0', set at a right angle to it and adapted to completely or partly close or uncover an opening I) in the lower segmental portion of the rear side of the box. Said opening, being provided with a nozzle B, is made to communicate with the smoke stack A by a connecting pipe, E, in lieu of the check damper usually provided in the said smoke stack. A rod, chain or cord, F, secured to the crank 0, passes up to one of the rooms, from which the crank may be controlled. A slide, B", is provided in the front of the valve box on the same side of the valve 0 as the opening I), so that if it be open, a current of air entering it may pass through said opening into the pipe E and smoke stack A. The relative position and adjustment of the valve 0 with the cranl c' and opening b'is such that when the latter is completely closed by the back 0,
the valve is fully open and the crank at its greatest upward inclination with the horizontal, as shown in Fig. 5,all the air passing through the duct D passing through the valve box and being drawn into the ashpit A. The valve, however, may also be closed against the ashpit, so that no current can pass from the duct D through the box B into the ashpit, and the opening I) be closed also, as shown in Fig. 6, by just lowering the crank c a little. It may also occupy any intermediary position between the latter and that shown in Figs. 7 and 8, which show thecrank in its lowest position and the opening b fully open but the box closed against the ashpit. The edge of the sector back 0 forms a stop for the valve against the top of the valve box, and another stop, I), may be provided for its opposite extreme position. If the air in the room thus connected becomes close, the chain or cord F is drawn up and the Valve brought into the position shown in Fig. 5, when the draft of the furnace will draw the air from the room through the duct D into the ashpit, thus increasing the draft of the furnace and causing new air to enter the room. If it is not desired to increase the draft of the furnace and consequently the production of heat, the valve is brought into the position shown in Fig. 7 or any position intermediary between it and that shown in Fig. (5, when the draft of the chimney will exhaust the air from the room through the duct D, passing through the opening I), pipe E and the smoke stack, at the-same time checking the draft of the furnace. The slide 3" may be used for summer ventilation of the furnace room. The arrows in the figures show the direction of the draft.
We claim as our invention- 1. In a ventilating and furnace checking device, thecombination with the ashpit mouth of a furnace or boiler, of a valve box connected with said mouth, a duct connectingsaid box with the room to be ventilated, a nozzle 011 the lower rear part of said box, a pipe connecting said nozzle with the smoke stack of the furnace, a valve having a sector shaped back ata right angle and hung at the top of the box on an axle provided with a crank and said valve adapted to allow or interrupt a current passing through said box and to cover or uncover with its back the opening in the said nozzle, and a chain or rod F adapted to operate said crank, substantially as set forth.
2. In a draft and check valve fora furnace or boiler, the combination of a boxrectangular in cross section having part of its bottom segmental longitudinally, an opening in the lower part of one of the sides over the segmental bottom, a plate C hung at the top of the box and having a sector shaped back plate 0 at a right angle adapted to cover said opening, and a crank 0 adapted to be operated by a cord chain or rod, substantially as set forth.
3. In a draft and check valve for a furnace or boiler, the combination of a box B rectangular in cross section and having part of its bottom segmental longitudinally, an opening 1) in the lower part of one of the sides over the segmental bottom, a plate 0 hung at the top of the box adapted to sweep the segmental bottom and having a sector shaped back 0 at a right angle adapted to cover said opening and a slide B" in the side of the box opposite to that in which the opening I) is located and on the same side longitudinally of the valve 0 as said opening, substantially as set forth.
