SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,953, dated June 5, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN E. EKLUND, a subect of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Exh1b 1tors, of which the following is a specification. 1
The objectof this invention is 1to construct aplcture exhibitor having two compartments located in the same horizontal plane, and means for moving a picture holder from each compartment into the other compartment thereby presenting to view the pictures carried by all of the holders in succession.

The main portion of the exhibitor consists of the faces 1, having glass panels 2, and con nected by ends 3, all secured to a base board 4, the ends being of less width at the top than at the bottom, and a cover 5, closes the upper end of the exhibitor and is made removable in order that access may be had to the inside of the exhibitor, a central vertical partition 6, divides the exhibitor into two sections or compartments of equal size and is formed with passage ways 7, forming a communication between the two compartments within each compartment is located a series of picture holdersS, whichare vertically slotted in order that the pictures may be held in a flat manner and each has its bottom provided with two inclined notches 9, and 10, as shown at Fig. 1, the base board 4, shown in top View at Fig. 1, and under side view of Flg. 3, is provided with lengthwise slots 11 and 12, lying flush with the inside surfaces of the faces of the exhibitors, and the base board is provided with transverse slots. 13 and 14; and the upper face being provided with a recess 15, within these slots are located a sliding block shown atFig. 5, having a portion 16, lying within the slot, the upper transverse portion lying within the recess, and extending above the upper face of the base board, and from the lower face of the bar 16, extend teeth 18, forming a toothed rack.
' Within the base proper 19,0f the exhibitor is placed the mechanism for transferring the picture holders from one compartment or section into the other compartment, and consists of a central toothed wheel 20, having a pivotal connection with the base, and also a pivotal connection with the base board. Within grooves 21, formed in the base proper and extending in the lengthwise direction thereof are located toothed racks 22 and 23, which have a connection with a central gear wheel 20, the rack 22 provided with a handle 24, ex tending transversely of the base and is also provided with a hook 25, rising vertically, and from the rack 23, extends a handle'26, and is also provided with a similar hook 27, said hooks facing in opposite directions. These handles move in slots 28 and 29, respectively carrying the toothed rack within their grooved guide ways. The toothed rack 22, engages the teeth of a toothed wheel 30, which in turn meshes with the teeth of one of the racks .shown at Fig. 5 movable in the transverse grooves in the base board, and a spring 31, bearing against the face of the toothed wheel 30, prevents its rotation after the toothed rack 22, has moved beyond its reach. A similar toothed wheel 32, with its spring dog 33, is provided for the other toothed rack 23.
It will be noticed that if the base board shown at Fig. 3, be placed upon the base proper shown at Fig. 4, the hook 25, will enter the lengthwise slot 11, and the hook 27, willenter the remaining slot 12, the short toothed racks 18 will mesh with their respective toothed wheels 30 and 32, the face of the base proper being recessed to accommodate their thickness. Upon the movement of the handle 24, the toothed rack 22, will be carried with it which will impart movement to the central gear wheel 20, causing the toothed handle 24 or 26, be moved.
rack 23, located in the opposite face of the base to move in the opposite direction and this movement of the rack will impart a rotary movement to the toothed wheel 30 and 32, consequently to their short toothed racks meshing therewith until the principal toothed racks have become disengaged from the toothed wheels 30 and 32, when they will remain at rest, consequently these short toothed racks during the further movement of the principal toothed racks and until their return into engagement therewith when they will move in the opposite direction, returning the short toothed racks to their starting position, these movements will take place it either The movement of the short toothed racks carries the plate 17, with it from the position shown in solid lines to that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, a similar movement being imparted to the plate in the other compartment.
In the drawings the parts are shown in their normal positions and at Figs. 1, and 2, will be noticed that one of the picture holders of the series of holders in each compartment or section stands before the passage ways 7, in the vertical partition 6, and at Fig. 1, may be seen the upper end of the hook 25, in engagement with the lower end of the picture holder, if movement be imparted to the handle 24, the hook 25, will carry the picture holder with which it is in engagement, from the compartment in which it was at rest through the passage way into the other compartment and before it has fully entered the other compartments the plate 17, will have moved to the position shown in dotted lines in order that the picture holder may pass between it and the other holders in that compartment. It will be noticed that a picture holder is taken from each compartment at the same time and transferred to the other compartment so that the same number of holders are always in each compartment thereby allowing room for the new holder being transferred to the respective compartments. Upon the return movement of the handle the plate 17, of each compartment will be moved from the position shown in dotted lines to that shown in solid lines which will carry the picture holder transferred from the other compartment against those already in said compartment forcing the entire series in said compartment against the opposite face of the exhibitor which will present a new holder of each compartment before its respective passage way, and the hooks extending through the base board will return to their original position and engage a new picture holder when the operation may be repeated and repeated again until the pictures held by the holders have been seen through one face of the exhibitor when the handle of the opposite face may be operated exposing to view all of the pictures held by the reverse side of the holders. The
hooks will have reached a position to engage a picture holder before the holders have reached their position before the opening in the partition.
At Fig. 2, is shown a block 84., which guides the upper end of the picture holder while being transferred and upon its entering the other compartment it will pass beneath the flat spring 35, and the movement of the plate 17, will carry the picture holder beyond the inner face of the fiat spring which will hold the series of holders in that compartment against the opposite face of the GXhlbltOli it being understood that a like guide block 54, and flat spring 35, are employed for each compartment.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a picture exhibitor the combination of a base, and a top portion, a vertical partition separating the top portion into two com partments, mechanism located in the base portion for moving the picture holders from one compartment into the other compartment, the top portion being wider at the bottom than at its upper portion.
