K. PENN. MULTIPLE RECORD.
No. 520,774. Patented. June 5, 1894.

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
KATY FENN, OF CHICAGO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO KATE LAVVLOR, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS.
MULTIPLE RECORD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,774, dated June 5,1894;
Application filed March 22, 1 8 94.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KATY FENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Multiple EtecOrd, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to a device which may be desirably employed for the accomplishment of various different purposes in order to record and preserve the names of a number of different persons calling or to record and preserve communications.
My invention has for its object the provis ion of a device, simple and compact in construction and occupying but little space, which device asa whole may be conveniently and readily secured in place upon a door, or other suitable place, and which device will present a sightly appearance when disposed 1n place, the means for accomplishing the above results being of such a character as that the members carrying the length of paper upon which the nameof the caller or communication is inscribed may be removed and replaced from their supports in order to remove or replace the lengths of paper, and one of which members holding and supporting the paper, in conjunction with the other member, is of such form as that a person may write the name or communication readily and conveniently upon the paper and by manually turning the said members present an uninscribed portion of the paper for the nextper- .son and at the same time preserve the completed record.
My invention consists in. a suitable base plate having an inclosing cover hinged thereon and a winding roller for supporting and carrying a suitable continuous length of paper, which rolleroperates in conjunction with a rotatable paper holding and supporting member having a flat face or surface, serving as a plate beneath the paper stretched over said face, so that the writer may readily and conveniently inscribe a name or communication upon the paper, the same being then manu ally wound upon the roller aforesaid and thus preserved and an uninscribed portion of the paper at the same time brought into position upon the flat surface of the paper holding and Serial No.'504,738. (No model.)
supporting plate memberin readiness to again receive an inscription, the device being so constructed'as that both the roller and the plate member may be readily removed and replaced relatively to their supports.
Reference may now be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device the hinged cover being thrown back. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing more fully the means by which the roller and plate member are removably held.
A base plate A is provided having hinged thereto a suitable cover B. Projected from the base plate are the standards DD the standard D having the perforations d-d constituting the journals for the bearings 6-6, respectively for the roller E and the plate member G, the opposite bearings f-f of the said roller and plate member being held removably within the open journals gg on the standard D by means of the spring piece H secured at or near the center of its length to the said standard D so that each end portion of said spring piece H bears over, and upon the bearings ff of the roller and the plate member. The plate member G, as is apparent, presents a flat surface, the continuous length of paper J being wound about its edges and stretched over the fiat surface thereof between its edges, so that a flat backing plate is provided alfording means whereby a person may readily and conveniently inscribe a name, address or any desired communication, and by turning the thumb wheel K secured on the roller E may then rotate said roller and at the same time rotate the plate member G to withdraw the completed communication and preserve the same and at the same time present an uninscribed portion of the length of paper J to be again used as before.
In order to remove either one, or both the roller E and the plate member G, it is simply necessary to raise the spring piece H at either or both of its ends so that said roller and plate member may be withdrawn, the end edge of the plain uninscribed length of paper J being inserted in the slot h of the plate member G and the paper wound about the same the remaining end edge thereof being inserted in the slot j of the roller E and the said roller and plate member being then repositioned upon the standards D and D the device being thus supplied with a clean and clear length of paper.
It will be obvious that when the length of paper has been filled with communications the same may be withdrawn from the device and preserved, by the removal of the rollerE and the plate member G.
I provide supporting hooks L projected from the base plate A adapted to hold a pencil M within convenient proximity to the plate member G.
The continuous length of paper J may be perforated transversely at intervals in order to provide means by which the said lengths may be severed readily for the purpose of preserving each of the comm unieations sepa rately.
It will be also apparent that the device as a whole is compact and may readily be secured upon a door by means of screws passed throughthe base plate, and adapted to be used readilyand conveniently to preserve a record of a succession of callers, as well as to preserve a record of any communications which it may be desired by any one to make by inscribing the same upon the continuous length of paper J.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1 In a multiple recording device, a suitable base plate, a cover hinged thereto and standards projected therefrom, a winding roller adapted to be manually rotated to which one end edge of a continuous length of paper is removably attached and a flat plate supporting member also adapted for rotation about which the said continuous length of paper is wound and from which the paper is unwound and Wound upon the roller 1n the manual rotation of the latter, said plate supporting member by virtue of its [lat face over which the paper is stretched serving as a backing.
2. In a multiple recording device, a suitable base plate, a cover hinged thereto and standards projected therefrom, a wind ng roller adapted to be manually rotated to which one end edge of a continuous length of paper is removably attached, a flat plate supporting member also adapted for rotation about which the said continuous length of paper is Wound and from which the paper 15 unwound and wound upon the roller in the manual rotation of the latter, said plate supporting member by virtue of its fiat surface over which the paper is stretched serving as a backing, and a spring piece bearing upon the ournals respectively of the roller and the plate member at one side thereof whereby said roller and plate member may be removed and replaced relatively to their respective standards.
In testimony whereof I ailix mysignatu re in presence of twowitnesses.
KATY FENN. Witnesses:
