SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,338, dated May 22, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HELEN A. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Clymer, in the county of Chautauqua and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Preserving-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to preserving jars, and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved jar of such formation whereby it is adapted for the reception of fruits and vegetables in their whole or unbroken condition, in which the contents can be readily removed, and the jar thoroughly and easily cleansed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a jar of this character, embodying simple and inexpensive means for fastening the cover in place and insuring the jar against admission of air.

To this end, the invention consists, substantially, in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of a preserving jar, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig.3 is a top plan view of the jar with the cover and fastener removed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view, illustrating the manner of attaching the fastener. Fig. 5 is similar view of the fastener, detached.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the jar or can, manufactured of glass, tin or other suitable material, and formed with a-receptacle, a, of a corresponding sectional area throughout its length. Near the mouth, B, of the jar or can is provided a circumferential flange or rib, b, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. The top surface of the flange b is broadened by reducing the exterior diameter of the mouth of the jar or can, and said surface forms an annular shoulder,

D designates the cap or cover, which 1s formed of the same material as the jar or can. This cap orcover is formed with a smooth top-surface, d, and with a downwardlyprojecting annular flange, d which rests upon the sealing-ring and incloses the mouth of the jar or can. For retaining the cap or cover in place and rendering the jar or can airtight, a fastening device is employed whlch will now be described.

E designates a bail formed of heavy wire, of an approximately U-shape, and provided with out-turned ends 6 e. The bail is secured in place by a band or wire, F, bent at about its center to form an eye, f, adapted to IIBGGHVQ one of the outturned ends of the bail, and from said eye the ends of the wire are passed around the jar or can, just below the flange b, and secured together. One of the secured ends of this wire is extended and bent to form a hook, f adapted to receive the other out-turned end of the bail. When secured by the wire F, the bail projects up at opposite sides of the cap or cover and over the same, and about centrally upon the bail is disposed an inverted V-shaped spring, G. The

latter is also constructed of wire, formed at its apex with one or more coils, g, through which the bail passes, the coils serving to obviate play of the spring. The members, 9' g, of the spring extend downwardly andbear upon the cap or cover, the ends of said members being bent slightly upward to form smooth bearing surfaceswhich contact with the cap D.

The operation and advantages of my 1nvention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. By the employment of a jar or can of the same interior diameter throughout its length, large fruits and vegetables may be preserved in their whole state, the contents of the jar or can more conveniently removed, and the same more readily and easily cleansed than is the case with jars or cans having a contracted mouth or opening. To seal the jar or can, the cap is placed thereon, with an intervening sealing ring. Thebail is then connected with the eye of the securing Wire, with the spring seated over the cap, and the opposite side of the bail pressed down and the bent end thereof connected with the hook f. WVhen thus secured, a continuous pressure is exerted by the spring uponthe cap, retaining the same securely against the packing ring, and thus effectually preventing entrance of air into the jar or can.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a jar or can, and a cover therefor, of a fastener comprising an approximately U -shaped bail having outturned ends adapted to be removably connected with the can or jar, said bail extending over the cap or cover, and an inverted V-shaped spring provided at its apex with one or more coils encircling the bail, the members of said spring bearing upon the cap or cover; substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a jar or can having its receptacle formed of a corresponding diameter throughout its length, and provided with a circumferential flange near its mouth, and a cap or cover inclosing the latter, of a fastener comprising a wire or band encircling the jar or can below the flange and provided at opposite sides, respectively, with an eye and hook, an approximately U-shaped bail having its ends turned outwardly and adapted to engage said eye and hook, said bail extending over and above the cap or cover, and an inverted V-shaped spring provided at its apex with one or more coils encircling the bail and having its downwardlydivergent members bearing against the cap or cover; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
