LOADING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,988, dated May 15, 1894. Application filed February 11, 1392. Serial No. 21,127. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, H ORATIO N. CARPENTER, of Riley township, in the county of Clinton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loading Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved apparatus for loading weights into a wagon or other vehicle, and is intended primarily for loading corn shocks or other bundles too bulky and heavy to be readily handled by hand.
The drawing is an isometric, partially in section.
J, J, J, represent three uprights, so arranged as to be capable of being easily secured on one corner of a wagon box or hay rack, which is indicated by dotted lines marked L. Of course four uprights may be used, but I prefer the arrangement shown, as this enables the device to be used on a wagon box or hay rack without encroaching upon the capacity of the vehicle.
K K represent bolt holes through which the uprights may be bolted to the wagon-box or hay-rack.
H represents a platform'carried on the upper ends of uprights J, through which is formed an opening. H represents a similar platform below platform H, through which is an opening in line with the opening in platform H.
WVhen only three uprights J are used the unsupported corner of platform H may be braced from the triangular platform 11 by an inclined brace I.
C represents a rotatable post passing through the holes in platforms H H, and capable of turning freely therein.
F represents a shoulder on said post C,
adapted to rest upon the upper surface of platform H, or upon the loose ring G.
M represents a loose ring inclosing post 0, and lying on the top of platform H.
0 represents a pin adapted to pass through a hole through post C.
In the position shown in the drawing, the Weight of post C is taken by pin 0 resting on ring M. Post C can be lowered by removing pin 0, and letting said post down until its shoulder F rests either on ring G or on the platform H, as indicated in dotted lines.
D represents a slot formed in the upper part of post C, and A represents a lever of the first order passing through slot D and fulcrumed on pin E. At each end of the lever A,Iform a hole B, B,to receive the cords P and Q, the cord P being on the short arm of the lever, and the cord Q on the long arm of the lever.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The apparatus is set up at the point where it is desired to load. The post C is adjusted as to height according to the height to which it is desired to lift the weight. This may be either as shown in the drawing, with the post C raised to its full extent, or with the post C lowered and resting with its shoulder F upon platform Hor ring G. The short arm of the lever is pulled down by means of the cord P and the cord is then made fast to the weight, (usually a corn shock) to be lifted. The operator then takes hold of the cord Q and by pulling down upon it raises cord P and weight thereto attached until it has lifted it high enough so that the weight will clear the wagon, or other place upon which the weight is to be loaded, when by exercising a sidewise pull on lever A, the post C turns freely carrying the load to the point where it is to be unloaded, when by slacking off the cord Q, the load is deposited in the required place.
I have used this apparatus practically in loading corn shocks onto a wagon, a kind of work where the weight to be lifted is too bulky to be readily handled, and find that with this simple apparatus two men can easily and rapidly load corn shocks into a wagon, while'without the apparatus this is a very difficult task.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An apparatus for loading weights into a vehicle, consisting of uprights J adapted to be secured to the corner of the vehicle'box and having platforms II and H arranged one above the other, an axially rotatable and vertically adjust-able post C extending through the said platforms and provided with a shoulder F to rest on the upper platform, a pin 0 engaged with the post and resting on the lower platform, a lever A fulcrumed between its extremities in the upper end of the post, and cords P and Q attached to the opposite ends of the said lever, substantially as described.
