SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,914, dated May 15, 1894.
' Application filed October 31,1893. Serial No. 489.6 (No model To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN KOETH, of Suhl, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drums, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a drum, tymbal, or similar musical instrument which is so constructed, that its heads may be stretched or slackened, from a single point and by a single manipulation;
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved drum; Fig. 2 a section on line R E Fig. 1; Fig. 3 an elevation of the tension mechanism, showing the drum heads slackened; Fig. 4 a similar elevation with the drum heads stretched; Fig. 5 is an elevation of the key or drum stick, and Fig. 6 an end View of t-he'same.
The letter A represents the cylindrical body of the drum, surrounded centrally by an open ring B. The ends of this ring may be drawn together by a tension screw D. To the ring B, a set of arms 0 are pivoted, the outer ends of which terminate in eyes a, connected to the drum heads, or the pressure rings A, by means of hooks a. If the screw D, is tightened up, the ends of the ring B will be drawn together and the arms 0 will be drawn with their inner ends toward the screw. Thus the arms will assume an inclined position (Fig. 4) and stretch the drum heads. If the screw D is released, the arms 0 will assume a straight position and the drum heads will be slackened (Fig. 3). In this way, the drum heads may be stretched or slackened uniformly around their entire periphery, from one point of action and in a very simple manner. The screw D is provided with an angular head, adapted to be engaged by a key or socket d, formed preferably within the end of the drum stick M.
What I claim is s The combination of a drum with an open ring, a connecting screw, and a set of pivoted arms that are connected to the ring and to the drum head, or drum head ring, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
