Be it known that I, THOMAS WASHINGTON CROZIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Separable Button, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in separable buttons, the objects in view being to produce a construction of button adapted for use for cuffs and collars or otherwise if so desired, and which is of simple, cheap and economical construction, and whose parts are readily assembled, locked or unlocked and disconnected.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawingsz-Figure l is a side elevation of a button embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the button the parts being separated. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the button, theparts being connected. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through the head of the button. Fig. 5 is a plan view to show the shape of the beveled web on the hollow post.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the practice of my invention I produce a button comprising two sections, which I will designate for the purpose of convenience as the head-section and the base-section. Th former consists of in the present instance a circular head 1 which is hollow, and it will be understood may have any external ornamentation desired. The head 1 has depending from its center a cylindrical stud 2 and at one side of the stud there extends transverse the head a cross-bar 3 provided adjacent to the head and at one side of itscenter with a slot 4. Betweenthis cross bar and the side flange of the head there is interposed a V-shaped leaf spring 5 whose inner branch extends over the slot in the cross-bar and closes the same, and whose outer branch being shorter than the inner branch, bears against the Wall of the head at an intermediate point of said inner branch. The base-sec- 'tion consists of a disk-like base 8 and from the same rises a hollow post 9 adapted to fit removably over the stud of the head-section, and said post is provided at its upper end with a laterally disposed web 10 having its free end beveled, which when the head is revolved and the hollow-post has received the stud will be caused to take through the slot in the cross-bar forcing the spring away from the opening and passing beyond the end of the spring will permit the latter to return to the opening, said spring bearing agalnstthe end of the web and retaining the same against further movement. Thus a secure lock is formed between the parts, and the same can only be disconnected by giving the head a retrograde movement against the tension of the spring, thereby forcing the spring of the.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple construction of button, the same consisting of Very few parts, that are readily assembled, and which when complete produce a button that is capable of being employed as a collar or cuff-button or otherwise as desired, and is capable of being readily applied or removed from its position.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A separable button comprising the holhow head having a depending stud, a base provided with a hollow post fitting on the stud and provided with a laterally extending web, a spring mounted in the hollow head and engaging the end of the 'web, and a crossbar mounted in the hollow head for engaging the lower edge of the web, substantially as I,

The herein described improved separable button, the same consisting of the hollow head having a depending stud, the crossbar at one side of the head provided with a slot, and the spring interposed between the cross-bar and the exterior wall, of the disklike base having the central hollow post, and the beveled web formed at one side and at the upper end of the post and adapted to be sprung through'the slot and bear against the spring and to be engaged thereby, substantially as specified.
