SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,362, dated May 8, 1894. Application filed November 25, 1893- Serial No. 491,992- (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHN WALLACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union, in the county of McI-Ienry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wheels of windmills and consists in the manner of forming the supports for the sails in order to hold them inrigid manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a front face elevation of the wheel in which a series of sails are shown. Fig. 2, is a vertical section on dotted lines A Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a section on dotted lines I), Fig. 1. Fig. 4,
is an isometrical representation of a section of the hub 3, showing its front saw-toothed face.
The sails 1, employed in the construction of this wheel are of the well known form used Each of these sails has a spoke 2, firmly riveted thereto which holds the sails in a radial po-.
sition, the lower ends of these spokes have a connection with a hub 3, secured upon the shaft 4. A front brace rod 5, has a connection with the sail nearits upper end and extends obliquely downward and forward and its lower end being connected to a hub 6, fitted upon the end of the shaft, and a nut 7, turned upon the screw threaded end of the shaft holds this hub in position. To the front brace 5, is riveted an angle brace 8, its center portion being bolted to the spoke which serves to strengthen the parts and hold the sails in a rigid manner.
To the front face of one sail and the rear face of the next sail is connected a short brace bar 9, by the bolts 10, passing through the braced in such a manner that it will be im- M possible for the wind to disturb them. The hubs 3, and 6, have their faces made in sawtoothed form as shown at Fig. 4, in order that the spokes 2 and front brace 5, may have a firm connection therewith in order to drive the shaft 4.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a windmill wheel; a series of sails having a spoke connection with a hub and a front brace extending forward obliquely having a connection with a suitable hub and -an angugular brace forming a connection with the front brace and spoke. 2. In a windmill wheel; a series of sails, each having a spoke connection with a hub and a brace extending forward obliquely having a connection with a suitable hub, angular braces located between the oblique brace and spoke and having a connection therewith, a brace connecting the front of one sail with the rear of the next, a brace having a connection with this connecting brace and connecting the rear edge of the sail, and a brace having a connection with the connecting brace and with the front edge of the sail.
