SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,721, dated April 24, 1894.

Beit known that I, ARTHUR H. JOHNSON, of Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Switch and Lock Movements, of which thefollowing is a specification.

Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a modified structure, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of still another modified structure.
The base plate upon which the movable parts are mounted is denoted by A and convenlently consists of an oblong rectangular plate, in practice sufficiently long to rest upon the projected ends of three consecutive railway ties or sleepers, as indicated in Fig. l. Between the plate A and the bar c, the switch anddetector bar and operating lever B is pivoted, its pivothaving a bearingat one end in the plate and at the opposite end in the bar c. The lever B is here shown as a three-armed lever, one of these arms b having connected to its end the operating rod C;
an oppositely extending arm ZJ having a connection with the alligator jaws on the end of the lever D; the opposite end of which is connected with the switch operating rod E; and the third arm b2 extending at an angle to the arms l) and b', having connected to its end a rod f for operating the detector bar F.
The front rod G which is connected to the switch rails H so as to be moved bythe movement of the switch rails under the action of the switch operating rod E, extends transversely across the plate A, underneath the same, and is provided at suitable intervals on its upper side with abutments g and g', the free ends of which are spaced from the body of the rod G sufficient to receive the edges of the plate A between them and the rod so that as the front rod Gis slid back and forth with the movement of the switch rails, the one or the other of the abutments g, g will be slid into position over the edge of the upper face of the plate A. g is shown in such position in Fig. l.
On the upper face of the plate A there is formed a raised track l having the curve of an arc of a circumference, and on said track there is seated a locking device K having in its under face a groove 7a corresponding to the raised track I and adapted to receive the track with an easy sliding iit. The locking device K, preferably of curved form, as shown, and of sufficient length so that the movement of the lever B for operating the switch will be sufficient to throw one end or the other of the locking device across the path of the abutments g, g on the front rod. The locking device K is provided on its upper face and preferably at its center portion, as shown, with a pair of uprising lugs k between which the arm b of the lever B is adapted to iit so that as the arm ZJ is moved, the locking device K will be slid along the track.
As represented in Fig. l, the lever B has been rocked in the direction to draw the switch rail H against the main railH and to throw the front rod G outwardly with its abutment g over the edge of the plate A. This move ment of the lever B by means of its arm b engaged with the locking device K, has slid the latter along the track I so as to bring the end IOO of the locking device in front of the abutment g', between it and lugs L uprising from the plate A. Such position of the locking device will eectually lock the front rod G in position to hold the points of the switch rail in close contact with the main rail and, because of the action of the detector bar F, it will be impossible to operate the switch to release the locking device from the front bar so long as the train is passing.
To throw the switch rails away from the main rails, the lever B is rocked in the opposite direction, the first part of its movement withdrawing the locking device K from in front of the abutment g', while its arm b moves along the face of one of the alligator-jaws without affecting the lever D, then rocking the lever D to operate the switch and at the same time sliding the front rod G in a direction toward the track and finally, while the end of the arm b moves along the opposite alligator-jaw sliding the locking device K in front of the abutment g-between it and the lugs on the plate A-tolock the front rod and hence the switch rails in the open position.
In the form. represented in Fig. 3, the locking device K is fixed to the arm b ot' the operating lever and in place of the lugs L, uprising from the plate A, the ends of the locking device are supported by radial braces k2.
In the form shown in Fig. 4, the locking device K2 is made to travel in a straight line along a slot a2 in the plate A, the said locking device being provided with depending lugs 7c3 at or near its opposite ends which, when the lever is thrown in one direction or the other engage the notches g2 in the upper face of the front rod G to lock it in position. In this instance the stud b3 which connects the arm b of the lever with the locking device is peru mitted a sliding movement transversely across the lockingdevice K2 in a channel 7a4 provided for the purpose, in order to account for the curved path of the stud b3 in its movement with the arm b.
It is obvious that other slight changes than those referred to might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my 1nvention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, but
What I claim is- 1. In combination, a switch operating rod, a detector bar, a multiple armed operating lever for moving the switch operating rod and detector bar, a sliding locking device engaged with an arm of the operating lever and abutments on the front rod with which the sliding locking device is adapted to engage as the operating lever is rocked, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a switch operating rod, a front rod, an operating lever for imparting motion to the switch rod, a curved track and a locking device mounted to slide on the curved track into and out of locking engagement with the front rod, the said locking device being under the control of the operating lever to throw it into and out of locking position, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a base plate and a bar spaced therefrom and secured thereto, of switch operating jaws and a lever pivotally secured between the base plate and bar, an operating lever pivotally secured between the base plate and bar in positionto engage the switch operating jaws, a switch operating rod, a front rod and a looking device under the control of the said operating lever to lock the front rod, substantially as set forth.
