certain new and useful Improvements in Catgut-Holders for Surgical Purposes, of which the following is a specification.

In sewing wounds cat-gut is used, which is unwound from a winder that is submerged in alcohol contained in a closed bottle, said catgut being passed through a hole in a cork ssf stopper. These cat-gut holders are objectionable for the reason that the cat-gut wound on the spool frequently gets entangled, so that it cannot be drawn out at the very moment when required for use.

The object of my invention is to furnish surgeons with an improved oat-gut holder, in which the entangling of the cat-gut and the getting out of order of the holder is entirely obviated, and a Very reliable supply of catgut obtained.

The object of the invention is further to furnish acat-gut holder in which each fold of the cat gut is'exposed to the action of the preserving fluid.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved oat-gut holder for surgical purposes. Fig. 2

is a vertical transverse section of the same, on line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of same, on line 3 3, Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a top view of the cat-gut holder, with the sheet metal screw-cap detached from the inclosing vessel of the same.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a bottle or vessel which is provided with a neck a, which is closed by a cork or other suitable stopper B, as shown in Fig. 2. The interior of the bottle or vesselAis filled with alcohol, so that the cat-gut stored up in the same is entirely submerged, said alcohol serving for the purpose of disinfecting the cat-gut and keeping the same ready for use when required.

In the bottle or vessel A is arranged a U- shaped winder O that is preferably formed of a glass tube that is bent into U-shape, the legs of the winder being made to converge slightly. On the U-shaped glass winder O is Serial No. 474,784- (No model.)

wound cat-gut b of suitable length, the wind ing being made in the shape of a horizontal figure 8, beginning at the lower and wider end of the winder and continuing up to the upper ends of the legs from which the cat-gut is passed through the central aperture (1 of the stopper to the outside, the outermost end being retained by a sheet-metal screw-cap D, which is screwed on the exterior screw-thread of the neck of the bottle, so that the bottle is hermetically closed by said cap D, in connection with the stopper B. In this winding the threads are kept out of contact with each other, thereby exposing each fold to the influenceof the preserving fluid. The lower part of the winderC is engaged by the hook shaped lower end of a Wire keeper E, the upper end of which is inserted into the stopper, preferably between the circumference of the same and the glass, so as to be held firmly in position thereby. The hook-shaped lower end of the wire keeper serves for retaining the lower end of the U-shaped winder in position at the bottom of the vessel, and permits the oscillating motion of the winder in following the motion of the cat-gut when the same is gradually paid out for use. Any length of cat-gut can be readily drawn out of the holder, as the winder is oscillated by the pulling strain on the cat-gut, so that it pays out one convolution of the cat-gut after the other until the entire length of the same is paid out for use. By retaining the lower end of the U-shaped winder on the bottom of the bottle the winder can freely oscillate and follow the motion of the cat-gut as the same is drawn out for use, without any chance of entanglement or obstruction, so thata reliable and yet comparatively cheap and effective cat-gut holder for surgeons is obtained.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
