The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The improved planer is provided with a suitably-constructed frame A, in which is journaled the longitudinally-extending cutter head shaft B, connected with suitable machinery for imparting a rotary motion to the shaft, the latter carrying two cutter heads C and C for planing the outer and inner faces of the felly D. The latter is placed rst on the segmental holder E of a lower felly-supporting bedEhung on a shaft Fjournaled in bearings G held adjustably on slides H fitted to slide vertically in suitable bearings in the main frame A. The felly D when arranged on this lower felly-supporting bed E is acted on by the cutter head C located directly above the felly and the bed E, so as to plane the outer face of the felly. The latter is next placed on an upper felly-supporting bed I provided with a segmental holder I on which rests the felly, the said bed being hung on a shaft F journaled in bearings G held -adjustably on the slides H, as plainly shown in Figs. l and 2. The bearings G and G are secured in place inthe slides H by bolts or pins passing through apertures in the slides as plainly shown in Fig. 1, so that the bearings can be raised or lowered for larger or smaller beds E and I used according to the radius of the fellies to be treated. The upper bearings Gl have their apertures for the bolts elongated as shown in Fig. l, to permit slight sliding movement in a vertical direction of the said bearings, the shaft F and upper bed I', for the purpose hereinafter more fully described. The felly D is then in alignment with the other cutter head O', so that the latter is adapted to plane the inner face of the felly, as hereinafter more fully described.
` In order to hold the felly D on the segmental holder E', I provide the rear end of the same with a stop F.2 provided with pins adapted to engage one end of the felly, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. On the sides of the holder E are arranged short lugs E3 extending upwardly to engage the sides of the felly to prevent the same `from shifting sidewise, it being understood that the oppositely arranged lugs are arranged a distance apart corresponding to the thickness of the felly; see detail Fig. 5. On the other segmental holder I and near the Vforward end of the same is arranged a stop l2 similar to the stop E2 and serving to engage the -forward end of the felly for holding the same in place. p The rearward end of the felly when resting on the holder I is adapted to be engaged by a lever I under the control of the operator and pivoted on the bed I, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A spring I4 presses on the said lever IB to hold the latter in its normal positionas shown in Fig. 2, that is, against one of the side arms'of the bed I. When the operator takes hold of this lever I3 and presses it forward to the position shown in Fig. 2, in dotted lines, and full lines in Fig. 3, then the said lever engages the rear end of the felly to press the same irmly against the stop I, thus locking the felly in place. The holder I is also provided with side lugs I5 to hold the felly in place and prevent sidewise movement thereof. The lower ends of the slides H are pivotallynconnected by links J with a IOO 2 trasse treadle K under the control of the operators foot to raise or lower the said slides and con sequently the beds Eand I, so as to move the fellies supported on the beds in and out of contact with the respective cutter heads C and Ci.
When the machine is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the beds E and I are in a lowermost position, so that the fellies placed on the beds are with their respective outer and inner faces, a suitable distance below the corresponding cutter heads C and C. When the operator presses the treadle K, the slides I-I are forced to slide upward, thus moving the beds E and I in the same direction to bring the fellies in contact with the revoluble cutter heads for planing the fellies, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to hold the fellies firmly against their holders E and I', I provide a friction roller L for the felly on the holder E', the said friction roller being journaled in the lower end of an arm L mounted to slide vertically in suitable bearings N' attached to the har N secured to the frame A, as plainly shown in Figs. l and 2. On the upper end of the arm L presses the free end of a spring O secured at its middle to the bar N, the other free end of the spring engaging a second arm L2 similar to the arm L and also mounted to slide in a bearing N2 attached to the bar N. On the lower end of this second frame L2 is jour naled a friction roller I..3 adapted to press on the inner face of the telly at the time the latter is supported in the other holder I.
In order to impart a starting feed to the bed E, the following device is provided: In the `holder E is arranged a transversely-extending pin P adapted to be engaged by the upwardly-extendin g arm of a bell crank lever Q journaled in a bearing R attached to a bar R connecting the two slides II with each other. The horizontal arm of the bell crank lever Q engages the lower slotted end S of an arm S engaged at its upper slotted end S2 by a bolt Na secured to the bar N. Now, when the slides H are raised by the operator pressing the treadle K, as previously described, then the bar R carrying the bell crank lever Q is moved in the same direction, wherebya swinging motion is given to the horizontal arm of the bell crank lever Q by the fixed arm S so that the vertical arm of the bell crank lever Q presses on the pin IJ and thus imparts a swinging motion to the bed Ein the direction of the arrow a at the time the outer face of the felly supported on the said bed moves in contact with the cutter head C. When it is desired to cut a chamfer on the inner face of the telly at the time the latter is supported in the hed I, then the stop I2 is removed and a pattern plate T is employed secured by bolts or pins T in the holder I', as plainly shown in Fig. 3. The under side of this plate, which is of segmental form is adapted to be engaged by a friction roller U journaled on top of the bar R moving with the slides I l as above mentioned. On the plate T is arranged an up# wardly-extending hook T2 adapted to pass into one of the spoke apertures Din the felly D, so as to hold the latter in position. The hook T2 is arranged in alignment with a recess T3 formed on the under side of the plate T so that when the friction roller U moves into the said recess, then the entire bed I moves vertically downward by its weight a short distance, the elongated bolt apertures in the bearings G permitting such movement. By this arrangement the inner face of the felly D at the spoke hole D is moved away from the cutter head C', so that no chamfer is cut around the spoke hole.
The operation is as follows: The operator in front of the machine, that is, to the left of the beds E and I, of Fig. 2, first places the bed E in position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by pulling the said bed forward in the direction of the arrow o. When the bed is in this position,the operator places afellyon the holder E', the said felly abutting with its rear end onto the stop EQand is held in place sidewise by the lugs E3. Then the operator swings the bed E rearward in the inverse di rection ofthe arrow a until it assumes the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, whereby the middle of the felly is below its cutter head C. When in this position, the upper arm of the bell crank lever Q rests against the pin IJ and when the operator now presses the treadle K to cause the slides H to slide upward, moving the bed E in the same direction with the felly D thereon, then a starting feed is given to the hed E by the bell crank lever Q acting on the pin P as above described. Thus, at the time the outer face of the telly D is moved against the revolving critter head C a slight feed is given to the bed and consequently the felly supported thereon, so that the cutter head nears the timber and makes a smooth starting cut, thus avoiding accident by tearing part of the timber of which the lelly is made. The upward sliding motion of the slides II is limited byastop I-I' striking one of the bearings for the slides, it being understood that the stop is arranged on the slides, as shown in Figs. l and 2. By this arrangement, the felly D is fed only a required distance to prevent the cutter head from cutting too deep into the timber. Now, the operator pulls on thebed E so as to swing the hed in the direction of the arrow a', whereby the cutter head C removes the surplus ma,- terial on the outer face of one-half of the telly, thereby planing one-half of t-he length of the fell-y. The hed E is then in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 at the time the cutter head C has cleared the rear endof the telly. The operator then reverses the telly D on the holder E', and the above described operation is repeated so that the other half ot' the outer face of the felly is planed. Vhen this has been accomplished, the felly is placed on the holder I of the other bed I and the operator then places his left hand on the le- ICO IIO
ver I3 andthe rightfhand on the forward end of the bed I to swing the latter rearward into of the felly, about one-half ofthe lengt-hV thereof, after which the operator releases thek treadle K to permit the slidesH to move downward with the bed I to enable the operator to reverse the felly on the bed I. -When this has beenv done, the above described operation is repeated and the other half length of the inner face of the felly is planed. VWhenever the operator desires to release the felly in the holder l', he releases the lever I3, so that the spring I4 forces the same back to its normal position, as'shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
It is understood that the segmental holders E and I are made to suit the diameter of the wheels for which the fellies are intended, and the bearings Gr are bolted or otherwise fastened to the slides I-I at a distance from the cutter heads C and C corresponding to one-half the diameter of the Wheel, and the bearings G' are fastened to the slides I-I at a distance from the cutter heads corresponding to one-half of the diameter of the wheel less the width of the felly. d
When the plate T is used instead of the stop I2, as previously mentioned, for chamfering the inner face 0f the felly then rounded knives are employed on the cutter head C', and the felly is engaged by the hook T2, as above described, the said hook serving as a gage to make the spoke hole and spoke seat in a-proper relation to each other, and it also serves as a clamp to assist the lever l3 and roller L to hold the felly in place during the timethe cutter does its work.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Afelly planer, comprising slides adapted to move up and down, and felly-supporting beds hung on shafts in the upper and lower ends of the said slides, each supporting bed being provided with a segmental holder for supporting the felly to move it in contact with a revolnble cutter head journaled in stationary bearings, substantially as shown and described.
2. A felly planer, comprising slides adapted to move up and down, felly-supporting beds hung on' shafts in the upper and lower ends of the said slides, each supporting bed being provided with a segmental holder for supporting the felly to move it in contact with a revoluble cutter head journaled in stationary bearings, and a treadle mechanism for raising and lowering the said slides and fellysupporting beds, to move the fellies in and out of contact with the cutter heads, substantially as shown and described.
3. A felly planer, comprising slides, a mechanism for raisin g andloweringthe said slides, felly-supportin g beds hung on the said slides and eachH provided with a segmental holder adapted to support the felly, friction rollers pressing the fellies in place on the said holders `during the time the cutter heads are cutting, and a spring pressing on the arms carrying the friction rollers, substantially as shown and described.
4. A felly planer, comprising slides adapted to be raised and lowered, a felly-supporting bed hung in the lower end of thesaid slides and provided with a segmental holder for supporting the felly, a pin arranged in the said holder, a bell crank lever adapted to engage the said pin,and journaled in abearing attached tothe said slides, and a fixed arm engaging the said bell crank lever to impart a swinging motion to the same at the time Vthe slides are raised, so as to imparta starting feed to the felly-supporting bed, substantially as shown and described.
5. A felly planer, provided With a fellysupporting bed having a segmental holder, a stop secured in the said holder, and a springpressed leverV pivoted in the said holder, to press against one end of the felly to move the other end thereof in contact with the said stop, substantially as shown and described.
, 6. A felly planer, comprising slides adapted to be raised and lowereda felly-supporting bed hung in the said slides, and providedwith a segmental holder for supporting the felly, a plate secured in the said holder and' provided with a hook and a recess, and a roller journaled in stationary bearings and adapted to engage the said plate at the side d containing the recess, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a felly planer, the combination of a shaft mounted in bearings having a vertical sliding movement, a felly supporting bed on the shaft, a plate secured in the bed and provided with a recess, and a roller mounted in stationary bearings and adapted to engage the recess of the said plate, substantially as and'for the purpose set forth.
8. -In a felly planer, the combination of a vertically sliding and swinging felly supporting bed, means for raising and lowering said bed, and means controlled by the raising and lowering of the bed for impartingaswinging movement tothe said bed as it is raised, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
