HYDRANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,061, dated March 27,1894. Application tied August 1s, 189s. serial No. 483,299. (No man.;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood Springs, in the county of Garfield and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Hydrant, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrants; and it has for its object to provide certain improvements in hydrants whereby the water may be discharged or distributed therefrom in a filtered or unfiltered condition.
To this end the main and primary object of the present invention contemplates an irnproved means of distributing water so that the same may be obtained in a perfectly pure and filtered condition for drinking and other purposes, and also in an unfiltered condition for washing, sprinkling and other general purposes. v
With these and other objects in View which will readily appear as the nature of theinvention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination andarrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure l is a side elevation partly in section of a hydrant apparatus constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the filter box, showing the self closing valve gate.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary hydrant stand adapted to be supported on the hydrant platform B, or other suitable support, and carries at its upper end lthe ordinary valve operating hand Wheel C, which is manipulated to control the hydrant valve in the usual manner, and depending from the hydrant stand A, is the outer hydrant casing D, which in the present invention is adapted to partially surround the distributing pipes hereinafter referred to and embraces at its lower end the Water main E, in the ordinary manner. Connected at its extreme lower end to the ordinary hydrant valve casing F, coupled to the main E, is the main service pipe G. The main servicel pipe G, together with the' connections thereof, is carried up and down by the movement of the hand wheel C, in the ordinary manner to control the hydrant valve as will be well understood, and to the upper end of the main service pipe G, is coupledthe three-way valve casing H, accommodating therein the four-way valve plug I, having the extended shank J, to which is connected the Irocking cross arm K. The rocking cross arm K, provides means for shifting the valve plug I, in its casing, and has connected to its extremities the lower ends of the operating Wires or rods L, the upper ends of which are attached to opposite ends of the foot lever M. The foot lever M, is pivoted at an intermediate point as at m, t-o one side of the hydrant stand A, directly above the platform B, so that by depressing the said lever from either side, by the foot, the valve plug may be shifted in its casing to direct theiiow of Water through either of the branch service pipes N and O, respectively.
The branch service pipes N and O, are coupled at their lower extremities to opposite sides of the valve casing H, so that either of the same may be brought in connection with the service pipe G, and both of said branch service pipes are coupledl together at their upper ends to support the screw stem P, engaged by the hand wheel C, for working the hydrant valve, and at such upper ends the said pipes are provided with an o-standing discharge spout or nozzle Q, of the ordinary construction.
At a point adjacent to its connection with the three-way valve casing H, the branch service pipe O, has connected with separate portions thereof the enlarged filter box R. The filter boX R, which is arranged directly in the line of the pipe O, so that there may be a continuous circulation of water therethrough when the pipe O is brought into play, is provided with interior parallel supporting lugs or fianges S, which hold there-between aporous filter brick T, or some other suitable filtering material, and ready access may be gained to the filter box for the purpose of renewing or replacing the filtering material by t means of the removable side plate U, inclosing a side opening in the box. Now it will be readily seen that by turning the valvey I, in one direction, the water from the main will be directed through the branch service pipe O, and the filter box in a line therewith, so that means shall be Yprovided for drawing perfectly pure filtered drinking Water from the hydrant, while by turning the valve I, in an opposite direction, connection with the pipe O is cut ed, and unfiltered water may be drawn out through the other branch pipe N, for Washing or other purposes.
The lter box R, may be suitably braced to the pipe N by the clamps V, and in order to provide for readily draining the said box of any accumulations of sediment, the same is provided at one lower end witha drain opening W', adapted to be normally/,closed by the sliding valve gate X. The slidingvalve gate X, is arranged to move between the parallel guides az, at one side of the box and is pivotally connected at its upper end by means of the connecting link x', with the weighted closing lever or arm Y. The Weighted closing` lever or arm Y, is pivoted at one end to a suitable clamp y, embracing the branch service pipe N, and provides means for holding the gate X, closed over the opening W. A lifting rod Z, is pivoted at its lower end to the lever or arm Y near its outer Weighted end, and extends to a point above the plat.- form B, so as to be conveniently grasped in order to lift the gate X, and uncover the opening W, whereby the filter box maybe readily drained and cleaned.
While l have described certain means for distributing Water from a hydrant, it will be of course understood that the same means may be used in connection with any system of service pipes for houses as Well as in other connections, and I will have it understood, that changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hydrant, the combination with the main service pipe` and the hydrant stand; of separate and independent branch service pipes coupled at their lower ends onto said main service pipe the latter pipe and said branch pipes being capable of a Vertical adjustment together, a filter box included in the line of one of said branch service pipes, and a valve device for directing the Water from the main service pipe intoeither of the branch pipes connected thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a hydrant, of the main service pipe having a three Way valve casing, separate and independent branch service pipes coupled to said three Way valve casing, a filter box included in the line of one of the branch service pipes and provided with an interior stratum of iiltering material anda normally-closed side drain opening below the lilterin g material, a four-Way valve plug turn ing in said valve casing, a rocking cross arm attached to the shank ot said valve plug, a conveniently arranged foot lever, and operating wires connected with said foot lever and to the ends of said cross arm,substantially as set` forth.
