To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER PEscHoNe, of Alton, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel mechanical fire kindler, the object being to provide a device that shall be simple of construction, positive in its operation, and readily adjustable.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a front view with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view of the kindler complete, while Figs. 4 and 5 show the tubular and flat igniting devices used in my apparatus.
A, A, represents a suitable housing, preferably having a Weighted base A, within which is mounted a simple train of gearing, comprising the spring driver B and the toothed wheels 0, D, and E. The shaft of the main driving gear projects upon one side and is provided with the thumb piece b, bymeans of which the gearing is wound up. The gears O and D are mounted upon the shaft 0' projecting beyond the housing in front, which has its end threaded to hold the retaining nut 19' as shown in Fig. 2. The gears O and B mesh, while the gear D engages the small gear E.
Mounted upon the shaft e, is an irregular latch plate F, having a number of semi-circular seatings e within which the latching disk H is adapted to seat as shown in Fig. 1. The disk H is secured by means of the pivoted arm h, to the shaft H, and is further proflange or lip This spring K is adapted to work upward and against the shaft 0'. In front the housing is further provided with the flexible fuse support L of wire, by means of which the fuse is held.
I use in combination with my fire starter an igniting tube M, composed of a paper body or stock, saturated with paraffine and covered with a mixture of chlorate of potash, sulphite of antimony and gum water. This ignition tube is held upon the shaft 0', and is secured between the disk 0 and the nut 17'. An abrading sheet N of paper stock, covered with phosphorus and gum water, is used to ignite the tube M. A fuse M is held above the tube M, of a suitable length and led to the grate, or the fire pot of the stove.
The operation of my device is as follows: The fire kindler, which is of a size convenient to be readily handled, is wound up by means of the thumb piece hot the spring gear B and wound up to a proper tension, when the gearing is locked, by means of the disk H which is placed within one of the seatings of the latch plate F, which prevents the gearing unwinding. The spring K is next pressed downward so that the ignition tube can be placed, when finally the abraiding sheet N is placed upon the spring and held by means of the lip It, as shown in Fig. 3. A starting strand :0 has been previously attached to the disk H, and connected to the hammer of an ordinary alarm clock, which has been set to ring at a certain hour. The kindler has been placed within or below the grate, and as the alarm starts at the appointed time, it drags the disk from its seating within the plateF releasing the train of gearing which in revolving grinds too central shaft C, provided with the disk 0, and nut b, the spring plate K working against said hub and provided with the retaining lip 10, the inflammable tube M, and abrading sheet N, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
