My lnvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in Oil cans, which may also be used as a gasoline can or other'liquid containing vessel; and my invention consists in certain features ofv novelty hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims Figure I, is a perspective of my improved can. Referring to the drawings: 1, represents the body of the can having the usual opening 2, for filling the can and cap-piece 3, the can, having a stem 4, with a central aperture 5,
' leading into the can for the purpose of supporting an air bulb 6, by the compression of which air is forced into the can and the oil is caused to be discharged through a tu'be 7, leading down nearly to the bottom of the can, and being preferably provided ywith apertures 8, for admitting the liquid or air to the tube. As the air passes down on the surface of the liquid, the same passes up through the tube 7, and out through a connecting hose 9, having a tip 10, thereon, by which the liquid or oil may be conveyed in to a lamp 11. The connecting medium 9, may be either a ilexible hose or other tube; but I have found in practice that a hose is more convenient as the same can be readily removed from the upper end of the tube 7, for the purpose of packing, cleaning, &c. The tube being flexible it may also be wound around the bulb on the top of the can, thus being entirely out of the way.
To the side of the can I attach one or more plates 12, said plates standing out from the side of the can and leaving an aperture 13, between the plate and the can.. I have shown but two plates; but more may be placed on the side of the can if desired. In the plates 12, I form a recess 14, for the purpose of a1- lowing a hand-piece 15, on the end of the stem 16 of the wick raiser to be inserted behind the plates, the stem of the wick raiser pass- Serial No. 487,255. (No model.)
allowing the lower end of the wick 18,-to re- 6o main within the opening 19, of the lamp while thelamp is being filled, thus providing av ready and convenient means for supporting the burner with the lower end of the wick remaining in the lamp in order to prevent drip outside of the lamp while the lamp is being filled.
I have shown two of the plates 12, in order that the can would be suitable for supporting a burner of a lamp of greater or less height. 7o
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a can for containing liquids having plates on its side with apertures into which the stem of the Wick raiser of a burner may be placedin order to support said burner during the filling of the lamp ;substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a can for containing liquids, the combination of a suitable can; plates on the side 8o of the can having a recess between the plates vand can, whereby the hand-piece of a wick' raiser may be inserted in said recess, and a slot in said plates permitting the stem of the wick raiser to pass downward in Order to secure the hand-piece at the rear of the same;
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 3. In a can for containing liquids, the combination of a suitable can, a tube in said can having perforations for the discharge of said 9o liquid; a bulb on said can for compressing the air; a connecting medium between said tube plates on the side of the can having a recess between the plates and can, whereby the hand piece of wick-raiser may be inserted in said 9 5 recess and a slot in said plates permitting the stem of the wick-raiser to pass downward in order to secure the hand piece at the rear of the same for supporting the lamp burner 'during the process of filling the lamp; subroo stantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
