SADDLE FOR'CYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,230, dated March 13, 1894. Application filed October 2,1893. Serial No. 486,992- (No model.) Patented in England July 21, 1892, Ito-13,311.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE SIMMONITE and HERBERT LACY HOLDERNESS, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hull, in the county of York, England, have invented an Improved Saddle for Cycles or the Like, (for which we have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 13,311, dated July 21, 1892,) of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to saddles for cycles and the like, and has for its object diminishing the vibration and allowing the saddle to be always level whether traveling uphill or down.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevation of saddle with our improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a modification of Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of springs and L pin shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modification of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. at is a plan of Fig. 3.
A is the saddle which has attached to it one or more rollers B in front, and two rollers O behind, whichrollers travel in or upon a concave or*other surface D, allowing the saddle A to be always on a level whatever angle the machine is placed in whether uphill or down, or upon the level; the concave or other surfaceof the saddle on which the rollers travel is (see Fig. 1) attached to a plunger or rod E, which fits into a cylinder F, containing a spiral spring G, the said plunger or rod E, moving up and down to the movement of the machine when in motion.

In Fig. 2, the saddle is attached to rods or pins E, on which are the spiral springs G, connected to these rods or pins E, is the L pin E of cycle, which passes through the center boss of the connecting link G.
In Figs. 3 and 4, the saddle A has spiral springs G attached between it and the brackets M of the hindrunners or rollers O O, the
front roller or rollers B being connected to the axle of the hind rollers and held a convenient distance apart, by rod K; the concave bearings being formed by wire bracket or support D, between and upon which the rollers B and 0 travel; the said wire support D being held by a clip or clips L, and secured by the same to the ordinary L pin E of the machine.
By the aforesaid improvements a pleasant and upright easy seat is obtained with little vibration as the saddle slides or oscillates upon the concave or other bearing, and regulates itself to the position of the cycle whether uphill or downhill, the jar or jolting to the rider is reduced to a minimum.
What we claim as the invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a concave guide bracket adapted to be attached to a cycle, of a saddle supported by the concave surface of the said bracket and free to slide longitudinally and adjust itself automatically to changes of grade, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a concave guide bracket adapted to be attached to a cycle, of a saddle, and rollers interposed between the saddle and the concave surface of the said bracket, whereby the saddle is rendered automatically adjustable, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a concave guide bracket adapted to be attached to a cylcle, of a saddle, a single front roller and two rear rollers carried by the said saddle and runningv on the concave surface of the said bracket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
