Description

J. L. GARVER.
Harvester.
Patented Dec. 19, 186! Wiueesas drive-wheel B.

PATENT OFFICE,-
JACOB L. relieves,- OE-HAM-ILTO-N, onto.
'IMPROVTEMENTIN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 61,579, dated December 19,1865; antcdated December 14, 1865 To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I,- JACOB L. GARVER, of Hamilton,-Butler county, Ohio, haveinvented anew and useful Improvement in Harvesters;
and I do hereby declare the following to befafull, clear, and exact descriptiou'thereofi' reference being-had to theaceompanyingdrawings,
making part of this specification; i
My invention" relates to, firs t-, a provision for preserving an accurate. mesh of the "driyingwheel wit-hpinions of diverseidiametersv; secondly, a provision for the. more easyiverticaly adj ustmentof the; cutting-apparatus; thirdly;
a more convenient arrangement of theu'ns'hip pin g-lever.
The main frame A is supported at any desired height with reference to the ground-wheel or driverB by the intervention of at yoke, 0, one of whose. forward extremities journals with the counter-shaft D of the reelv and sickle, while ,the other forward extremity journals in the .frame'atjDl, andwhose rear end is secured by bolt E toanypa'rt of a perforated rack, F, M'liiQhfIiSQSfi'OlIi the rear part of the main frame, while to theinterniediate portions of said yoke are bolted (G) the ionrnal-hox' H of the I represents the larger of two interchangeablepinions, which gear with and are driven by the cogson the concavity of the drivingto the yoke, traverses a slot, h, in said plate,
' so as to. enable the latter, when the bolt is slackened, to beadj ustedjlongitudinally of the yoke, in order to bring the drive-wheel accurately in mesh with the particular pinion for the time being employed; but in order to make the adjustment accurate, positive, and immovable, and thus avoid the present liability of the drive-wheel cogs to become jammed with those of the larger pinion or disengaged from those of the smaller pinion, I have provided V- grooves h h", (see 3,) whose'distance apart precisely corresponds with the di'fi'erence of radii of the pinions.
r K is a washer, which receives and fits the "neckof the holt.G, and which .is armed with a V-formed'torigue, k, which, being placed in one or other of the V-grooves.h. or h" in the journal-plate b'efore-the'sci ew G is made fast,
secures the exact distance of centers of drivewhcel and pinion without any delay 'or necessity of careful adjust'ment and 'free' from danger'of dislodgment; 1 t
' In orderto-enahlef-the [easy adjustment of the rear end ofjtlie yoke, I provide a lever, L, having a notched =footor'fulcrum, l, and pin 1, the former to strad'dle t'lie yoke and the latter for temporary insertion in the perforated rack F,"'as shown in-Fig'.-'1. qWhen done with, the
lever L is;' s hip'pedintofstaples a on the main. 1 frame.
In order to present the unshipping-leve'r M conveniently accessible tothe driver while the 'machine is in operation, 'lpivot it to a stand- .ard N, -which,,rising vertically, or nearly so,
*from the yoke, is notched (nn'lat top to receive a spring-catch, m, which projects from the leverM, whereby the lever is held to either the shipping oruushipping position at will.
Iclaim herein las newand of my invention-- 1. The arrangement ofth'e slotted anddohblygrooved journal-box H h h h, tongued washer K k, bolt.G',.fan d"yoke O, or their equivalents, for the positive, exact, and stable adjustment of the drive or'mast-er wheel with each change ,of'pinions, substantially as set forth.
2. The lever L Ll, formed and adapted to operate in combination withthe adjustable yoke O and with the perforated rack F on the main frame, in themanner represented.
3. In a harvester whose drive or master wheel journals in an adjustable yoke, G, the vertical bearer-standard N n n, so arranged upon the yoke as to place the unshipping-lever M m\ within convenient reach of the person driving while the machine is iumotion, as set forth.
In testimonyof which invention I hereunto set my hand. I
. J. L. G-ARVER. Witnesses:
GEo. H. KNIGHT, J AMES H. LAYMAN.
