SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,689, dated February 27, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. J UDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britsin, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in looks, and the object of my invention is to cause the parts which are assembled on the hollow lock bolt to form a complete lock mechanism of themselves.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of my lock. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line or a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached front elevation of the lock bolt and connected parts, and Fig. at is a front view of the back plate and selvage of the case.

My invention relates to that class of locks which employ a fixed hollow bolt with projecting dogs for engaging the keeper into which said bolt may be projected. Heretofore locks of this class have been constructed with a small hole to center the stem of the key in the back plate of the lock case, Whereby the key was not properly supported to operate the dogs untilthe lock bolt was secured to the case.

The lock case is made up of the selvage A, cap B and rear plate C. The lock proper is made up of the hollow bolt 1) and its plate 5 which forms an extension of one side of said bolt and upon which I pivot the dogs 6, the ends of which dogs project from the side edges of the hollow bolt as shown. These dogs are acted upon by springs 7 for throwing them outwardly in the ordinary manner. Between the heels of the dogs I form a cir- 4 cular depression 8 of a diameter large enough i to receive the whole width of the key bit, and

in the center of said depression I make a round hole 9 to form a center bearing for the stem of the key, whereby the dogs are properly pivoted upon the lock bolt and the key is centered and supported thereon so as to form a complete and operative lock independently of the case. In the back of the case I form a circular opening 10 large enough to admit the metal which is ofiset in forming the circular depression 8, as best shown in Fig. 2. The lock bolt and attached parts thus formed are then put in place in the selvage and on the back plate and secured thereto by means of the rivet 11.

While I prefer to form the depression in the plate 5 of the look so as to admit the key bit and let it in a little beyond the bottom tumbler or dog when said dog rests upon said plate, it is evident that said depression can be omitted if desired leaving said plate flat, the center bearing for the key being made in said plate as before described to form a complete lock independently of the case.

I claim as my invention- 1. The herein described lock consisting of the lock bolt D with attached dogs and the plate 5 having the center bearing 9, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

2. The herein described lock consisting of the hollow bolt and its plate 5 having the depression S and center bearing 9, and the dogs mounted on said plate, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
