DOUCHE-BATH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,468, dated February 27, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OLIVIA. A. GRAFSTROM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, haveinvented new and useful Improvementsin Douche-Baths, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to apparatus for administering vaginal and rectal douche baths, and it consists in a reclining couch for the patient to lie on the back and provided with an opening in the locality which will be below the parts of the patient to be treated when reclining on said couch, with a waste water receiver suspended under said opening, a fountain supporter at the foot of the couch, an elevated fountain thereon and an injecting tube and nozzle, all comprising a simple and ed tcient portable apparatus whereby the treatment can be administered with comfort to the patient and so that indefinite continuous flow of the liquid with unobstructed escape of the waste from the vagina may be had without soiling the couch, said couch having suitable slope from the head downward for the comfort of the patient and also insures the escape of the waste water into the receiver.

The invention also comprises the arrangement of the apparatus in a folding structure for convenience in handling and storing, also in a cabinet case which may be preferred in some cases for concealing the parts when not in use, all as hereinafter fully described reference being made to the accompanying drawings in whichi Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved douchebath apparatus as in use and constructed in its simplest form, and so as to be folded compactly for convenience in handling and for economizing space in transportation and storage. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of thesame in cabinet form, and drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the apparatus as in Fig. 2.

patient and somewhat higher than the foot end said legs being hinged to the underside of the bench top as at d to fold up thereon for adapting it to be more conveniently handled and placed aside. When a cabinet case as e is used the legs 0 are dispensed with and the bench top is pivoted at f between the sides of the case and at one edge or thereabout, so that the foot end of said bench top is supported by said pivots when adjusted for use, and at the same time it serves for a folding front of the cabinet case.

About themiddle of the bench top lengthwise or preferably nearer the foot end I provide the large opening g through it vertically and thereunder I apply the pan h suitably to catch the waste water used in the bath, said pan having an outlet 11 at the bottom to discharge into a receptacle j to be set on the floor, said outlet being provided with a stop cook it to retain the waste when receptaclez' is not in position.

Over the foot end of the bench top is a fountain Z for containing the water or other liquid to be used, with which the injecting nozzle m is connected by a flexible pipe at of suitable length to permit the nozzle to be inserted in the part to be treated, said nozzle having a stop cock 0 to retain the liquid and shut it off when required and to regulate the flow. This fountain is to be supported at a suitable height to utilize the gravity of the water for forcing it in thepart to be treated.

When the simple form of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 is used I provide the upright standard 19 on the foot end of the bench for this support of the fountain, and binge it to the bench as at q to fold down on the top of the bench for putting aside with a hook s and eye't to fasten said standard in the upright position, but when the cabinet case is used, its back 19 will form the support for the fountain, said fountain being detachably suspended by a hook it and bail or other equivalent device '0. The back of the case also forms a support for temporarily holding a cushion w for the convenience of the patient when required for rendering the bench more comfortable. I claim 1. In a douche bath apparatus the combination of the inclined reclining bench having the vertical opening through it at the middle or thereabout, said bench adapted for the patient to lie upon the back thereon with the parts for treatment over said opening and accessible thereby, said bench also having jointed and folding connection with its supports, the Waste receptacle attached to said bench under the opening and having the stoppered discharge pipe, the upright support for the elevated fountain, said elevated fountain supported thereon, the injector nozzle and flexible pipe, said pipe connecting the nozzlewith the fountain and having a stop cock, said bench and elevated fountain support being in the jointed relation to fold relatively to each other substantially as described.

In a douche bath apparatus, the combination of the inclined reclining bench having the vertical opening through it at the middle or thereabout, said bench adapted for the patient to lie upon the back thereon with the parts for treatment over said opening and accessible thereby, said bench also having the jointed and folding connection with its supports, the waste receptacle attached to said b'ench under the opening and having the stoppered discharge pipe, upright support for the elevated fountain, said elevated fountain supported thereon, the injector nozzle and flexible pipe, said pipe connecting the nozzle with the fountain and having a stop cock, and a cabinet case whereof the bench constitutes the folding front, and the back of the case forms the upright support of the fountain, said case being provided with a drop curtain concealing the waste receptacle substantially as described.
