To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE GUIL- LEAUME, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Cologne, in the German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Cables, (in respect whereof I have obtained Letters Patent in the following countries: Great Britain, No. 7,029, dated April 12, 1892; Germany, No. 65,311, dated April 13, 1892; France, No. 220,891, dated March 8, 1893; Belgium, No. 102,566, dated December 31, 1892; Italy, LXII, 220, dated May 2, 1892; Austria-Hungary, No. 20,129 and N 0. 39,499, dated August 20, 1892; Switzerland, No. 4,859, dated August 31, 1892; Sweden,No.1,280, dated March 30, 1893; and Russia, No. 11,845, dated August 25, 1893, not yet granted,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric cables or conductors for general use, and is based on and consists in developments of the invention the subject of Letters Patent granted to me and bearing date September 27, 1892, No. 483,285, the same being specially adapted for employment in telephonic transmission, while cables constructed according to my present invention are particularly suitable for telegraphic purposes.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my improved mode of construction, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a cable constructed according to my present invention and having eighteen conductors disposed in two concentric groups, separated by means of crimped cylinders made of non-conducting material of uniform thickness, and inclosed in a lead or other protective sheathing. Fig. 2 represents, in side view and transverse section, the central portion of the cable illustrated by Fig. 1. Such a group may itself be suitably covered and form a cable having six or other convenient number of wires.
In Fig. 2, the conductors a, a, a &c., are separated from one another bya crimped cylinder b of suitable non-conducting material, such as paper. This cylinder is star-shaped in cross-section, and may be made from material of uniform thickness. The cylinder presents longitudinal grooves b 1), b, 650., each of which provides an air-space wherein one of the naked conductors lies; these grooves becoming spiral on the parts thus associated being twisted about the axis of the said cylinder. The latter treatment serves to retain the conductors in position in their respective grooves of the crimped cylinder, as also to prevent the formation, or counteract the influence, of induced currents. Or the cable or strand may be formed as illustrated in Fig. 1 where a central stand, comprising six (or other convenient number of) wires, arranged in the grooves of a crimped cylinder as previously described, is surrounded by a group of twelve (or other convenient number of) conductors c, 0', 0 &c., arranged in the longitudinal grooves d", 61', d &c., of a larger crimped cylinder d or crimped cylinder of insulating material. The conductors c, c, 0 850., may be twisted with the grooved cylinder d; the direction of twist being pref erably opposed to that of the central group. The outer covering 6 consists of lead sheathing or other protective material. The number of groups may, moreover,be varied; that is to say, the central series of conductors and grooved insulating material a-b, and the surrounding series c-d, may be enveloped by a third group resembling the series c-d. The number of conductors in either or any group may also be varied, and the space in the center of the cable may be utilized for the reception of an additional conductor, as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. For use in an electric cable, a crimped cylinder, such as b or cl, made of non-conducting material and having spiral grooves or airchannels in which naked conductors may lie, substantially as herein described.
2. In an electric cable or strand forthe same, the combination, with naked conductors, of a crimped cylinder star-shaped in cross section, made of non -conducting material crimped and twisted to form spiral grooves or airspaces, and having the several conductors lying in the respective grooves, substantially as herein described.
3. In an electric cable, the combination, with a series of naked conductors a, c, 0. &c.,
ing material I), in combination with a concentrically-arranged series of naked conductors c, c, 0 &c., lying in the air-spaces of a spirally-grooved crimped cylinder of non-com ducting material 01, and with a lead or equivalent protective sheathing e, substantially as herein set forth.
