Jib/Q UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ANDREW R. PAUL, OF. SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO GUS A. PAUL, OF SAME PLACE.
BOATS DAVlT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,661, dated February 13, 1894.
' Application filed August 9,1893. SeiialNoASZMB. (Ne model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW R. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of 4 California, have invented an Improvement in Boats Davits; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the class of boats davits, and it consists in the construction and combination of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
The object of my invention is to provide boats davits which can be readily and quickly operated, without complications, and which will edectively carry the boat into position to be lowered and as fully withdraw it again.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for. a more complete explanation of my invention, the figure is a perspective view of the davits, showing their second position in dotted lines.
A represents the deck of a vesse1,of which a is the side rail.
To suitable blocks B secured to the deck are hinged at o the davits O, in such a mannor that they are adapted to swing about their hinges as centers in planes transversely of the vessels side, whereby their upper ends which are bent outwardly, as shown, are, by their outward movement thrown beyond the perpendicular plane of the side of the vessel, and by their inward movement are brought in again. These davits pass upwardly through and play in slots cl of heavy guide brackets D secured to the deck and rail of the vessel and rising approximately the height of the rail as shown. They are moved in and out by means of a crank E and suitable gearing which engages racks cl upon the fixed guide brackets. These racks may be under the brackets or they may be above them, as here shown, and the gearing may be of any suitable character. I have here shown this gearing as consisting of pinions F on a shaft f extending between the davits, and to one of which the crank E is attached. These pinions engage with gears G. on the ends of a shaft 9 extending between the davits, and these gears engage the racks d of the fixed brackets. Now, by operating the crank, the gears will travel back and forth in the fixed racks, and will carry the davits in or out as may be desired.
H is the boat which is suspended from the davits in the usual manner, and is adapted to be lashed to the spar I, which as the davits do not turn axially, as is usual, can be per manently fixed to them, as by having its ends fitted in socketed brackets attached to the davits. By thus mounting and'swinging the davits, the boat may be quickly thrown out beyond the side of the vessel, and can be lowered, and when it is raised again it can as easily be drawn in inwardly to position. The davits are locked in the position to which they are moved by means of a removablelocb ing pin J passing through the fixed guides D, either in front of or behind the davits according to the position in which they are to be locked.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved boat davit consisting of the guide brackets rising approximately the height of the ships rail having one end secured to said rail and the opposite end secured to the deck said brackets having the guide slots 02 and racks d, the davits hinged at their lower ends and provided with means for suspending the boat from their upper ends, a shaft journaled in thedavits having a gear wheel on each end thereof adapted to mesh with the teeth of the racks on the guide brackets, and a second shaft with pinions and mechanism for operating the gears and mov' ing the davits, substantially as herein described.
2. An improved boat davit consisting of the guide brackets having one end secured to the rail and the other end secured to the deck of the vessel, and each bracket having a parallel guide slot and rack, the davits hinged at their lower ends and carryingapermanently lashed spar near their upper ends, means for In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
