BREAKDOWN GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 514,574, dated February 13, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TONKS, of Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breech- Loading Firearms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in the breech loading fire arm described and shown in Letters Patent of the United States issued to me, dated January 5, 1886, No. 333,795, and the invention consists in abreech loading fire arm in making the top snap lever and the bolt of one piece, all substantially as hereinafter fully described; and the invention also consists in a breech loading fire arm of a novel manner of connecting the top snap lever and the spindle of the lever together all substantially as hereinafter fully described reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which Figure 1', is a detail longitudinal vertical section of a double barrel breech loading gun, the section being through one of the barrels, and between the barrels showing the parts of this invention and the manner of locking the gun. Fig. 2,is a similar sectional view to Fig. 1, but showing the barrels opened and in position for loading the same with the top snap lever and its bolt moved into position to unlock the gun. Fig. 3, is a plan view of the top snap lever and the bolt connected to its spindle removed from the gun. Fig. 4, is a plan view of the under side of the top snap lever; Fig. 5, a perspective View of its spindle. Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the bolt operated by the spindle.
In the drawings A represents a barrel of a double barrel breech loading gun, only one barrel being shown, pivoted at a to the breech block B; O the tang D the trigger plate of the breech block 13, by which the breech block is secured to the stock in the usual manner, but not shown in the drawings.
E, E, are the lugs attached to the under side of the barrel having notches b for the usual bolt E of such guns operated by the top snap lever F through its spindle G.
K are the triggers which are connected to the hammers, in the usual manner but not shown, and all of which are constructed and arranged for operation as usual in breech loading fire arms, and needing no more particular description herein except as to-t-he present invention.
In the patent above referred to, the bolt Z which engages with the extension rib A of the barrel is separate and distinct from the top snap lever although operated by it, but in the present invention such bolt is integral with and apart of thelever; and also in said patent the top snap leverand its spindle are made integral or in one piece, but in this invention the top snap leverandits spindle are made in two pieces, and secured together in a novel and peculiar manner, all of which will be now described.
In this invention L is the bolt, which engages with an open slot d in the extension rib M and it is made integral with the top snap lever, being a part and continuation of the same as shown more particularly in Fig. 4, and it is arranged to engage with the open slot d in the rib M of the gun.
Across the upper end or face of the spindle G is a V shaped rib e with which engages a V shaped groovefacross the inner face 9 of the lever F as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 more particularly.
The lever F is placed on the upper end of the spindle G its groove f over the rib e of the spindle Gand a screw Nwhich passes through an opening 77. in the lever F is screwed into a screw threaded socket m in the spindle, and screwed down firmly, and when in such position a check screwP is screwed down into the lever and edge of the head n of the screw N, preventing the loosening of the screw and consequently securing the spindle to the cover, as shown in Fig. 3.
In removing and replacing the spindle upon the lever the rib connection insures that the spindle will always be secured in the same place on the lever, to insure that it will be in proper position to operate other parts of the gun connected therewith.
The spindle is connected by its open slotQ in its lower end placed over a block R pivotedly connected to the bolt F. by which the bolt is operated as the spindle is turned by the lever.
\Vith the lever F in line with the tang G and stock of the gun its bolt L will be projected into the open slot (Z in the rib of the gun, lock- IOC ing or bolting the gun, but as the lever is swung to the right, its bolt L is swung or moved out of the slot unlocking such bolt at the same time through the rotation of the spindle G the main bolt E is unlocked.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a breech loading fire arm, in combination, a top snap lever having a V shaped groove in its inner side, a spindle havingaV shaped rib to engage with said groove and secured to said lever, and the bolt adapted to engage with and be operated by said spindle.
2. In a breech loading fire arm, in combination, a top snap lever having a V shaped groove on its inner side, a spindle having aV shaped rib on its upper end to engage with said groove, a screw securing the lever to the my hand in the presence of two subscribing 3 witnesses.
