HOLDBACK FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,219, dated February 6, 1894.

Beit known that I, WILLIAMFINLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schoolcraft, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Ioldbacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The principal object of niy invention is to provide a hold-back for vehicles which may be more readily detached and attached; and this is attained by forming the device of two separable parts and arranging one to be secured to the vehicle thill, while the other part is designed to be connected to the breeching, the connection between the two parts being effected by a peculiar construction which will be fully described hereinafter.
Other objects, such as simplicity and durability are contemplated, together with extreme ease of manipulation, all of which will now be described. l v
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a complete disclosure of my invention: Figure l. represents a longitudinal section of the entire device; Fig. 2. a perspective view of that portion of the device which is attached to the breeching; Fig. 3. a similar view of the thill section, and Fig. 4. a diagrammatical view illustrating the mode of operating the invention.
The reference letter @,indicates a thill which may be of any preferred forni and to which my invention is shown as applied.
b, indicates the body of the portion of the invention which is afxed to the thill; and this consists of a saddlelike casting secured by screws c, and having formed on its upper side Iianges CZ, which extend parallel with each other and longitudinally with the thill a. Projecting from the rear ends of these flanges are two arms e, which extend upwardly and thence forward parallel with the upper edges of the flanges d, so as to form two duplicate andregistering hooks elongated forwardly as shown. Secured rigidly to the thill, forward of the body b, and extending rearwardly and parallel with the thill until the body b, is reached, is a spring-arm f, which bearsfnear the forward endvof the knob, g, formed by a screw fastened in the thill. Thus by raising or lowering the second screw h, which holds the arm f, the arm may be raised or lowered at its forward end for a purpose that will be hereinafter seen. The rear or free end of the arm f, projects, as has been before stated, to the body b, and is located between the ianges d, ending but a short distance forward of the crotch of the arms e, or that point on the body directly forward of the vertical portion of the arms e, and at the rear of the horizontal portion.
z', indicates the breeching section which consists of a bar having a rounded forward end k, and the trunnions Z, projecting out laterally therefrom and on each side thereof, just to the rear of the end Za. Arising from the upper face of this section just to the rear of the trunnions Z, is a shoulder m, against which the rear end of the arm f, is adapted to bear. The extreme rear end of the bar z', is formed with an eye fn, vertically elongated and opening in a horizontal plane, whereby the breeching strap, o, is connected to the device. By reference to the drawings the relation this part of the device bears to the other section will be seen and there the trunnions Z, are respectively received by the arms e, so as to be capable of swinging therein, with the bar t', normally projecting to the rear and the shoulder m, in engagement with the end of the spring-arm f. By this means it will be seen that an effective connection is established between the two parts, one which on one hand is secure as possible and which on the other hand is allowed enough play to render it easy in operation and accommodating to the Varying conditions under which it will be called upon to work.
Fig. 4. of the drawings shows the mode of operating the bart' to effect a disconnection of the two parts; and this is done by first swing- Ying the bari forward or to the right which will cause the arm f, to be depressed and the shoulder m to lie upon the end of said arm. When this position has been effected the bar may be easily withdrawn by a forward movement, thereby disengaging the trunnions Z, and completely detaching the two parts. The connection of the parts is effected by an operation ICO which is a reversal of that just described; and to do this the bar t', is first arranged with its blunt or rounded end It, just at the ends of the arms e, the main portion projecting forwardly and the shoulder 'm bearing upon the upper side of the arm f, whereupon the device is pushed rearwardly until the trunnions Z, and the vertical portions of arms e, engage. At this the arm is swung rearwardly orto the left, which will throw the end it under the end of arm fand lift said latter end upon the former end and into engagement with shoulder m. Thus it will be seen that the two parts may be readily and quickly disconnected or connected and that owing to this attribute the hitching and unhitching of ahorse are greatly expedited, it being unnecessary to operate any buckles or to perform the usual operation of wrapping the breeching to the thill. The purpose of the screws g and h, is to adjust the position of arm f, and this adjustment is useful in regulating the pressure to be applied to the end 7c of the section t, whereby useless movement of the said section and rattling consequent thereof, is prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A holdback consisting of two parallel hooks opening horizontally, a spring arm extending parallel with the hooks and terminating between them, and a barhaving two trunnions adapted to pass between the hooks and with a shoulder arranged to positively engage the end of the spring arm when the bar is in operative position, thereby preventing the removal of the bar, and when reversed to loosely engage the said arm, whereby the arm may be withdrawn from between the hooks, substantially as described.
