CONDENSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,904, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed April 24, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
,Be it known that I, THOMAS M. EYNON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oondensers,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of means for adjusting the exhaust opening. of the combining tubes of a condenser, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of acondenser embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial longitudinal section of a portion thereof on .an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section on line as, at, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the body of a condenser, within which are mounted the slotted shells B and O, the shells B being stationary and the shells 0 adapted to revolve thereon. The shells B and O are each in series arranged in line with each other, the shell B having lugs or ears D through which are passed the bolts E, by which said shells are coupled as one. The shells C are provided with lugs F, through which pass the bolts G, whereby they are coupled as one, it being evident that as the shells C rotate on the shells B, the openings or slots in the several shells B may be opened and closed by the shells O, or partially opened and closed for adjustment of the volume of exhaust steam to be condensed.
In order to operate the shells O, the lugs F thereon act as gearing, and they are adapted to be engaged by the worm H, whose stem is mounted on the body A, and provided with a hand wheel J for conveniently operating the same.
Surrounding the shells B and C is a conical sleeve K, the top end of which is in communication with the exhaust steam inlet L.

M designates the water inlet, and N designates the water tube which is in communication with said inlet M, and with the chamber within the shellsLB and C, said shells forming the combining tube of the condenser.
P designates a ram which is threaded as at Q, and provided with a hand wheel R for operating purposes, the point of said ram entering the combining tube and serving by its tapering end to adjust the water passing through the tube N into the combining tube. It will be noticed that exhaust steam enters at the inlet L, and is directed to the top of the sleeve K, after which it passes down through said sleeve in the direction in which the water takes its course, and it imparts its momentum thereto, it entering the combining tube through the shells B, O, and escaping through the discharge tube S, the amount of exhaust steam admitted into the combining tube being adjusted by properly rotating the shells 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Acondenser having therein a combining tube formed of stationary and rotary slotted shells, the rotary shell being movable on the stationary shell, substantially as described.
2. Stationary and movable slotted shells forming a combining tube, and a sleeve sur rounding said shells and communicating with an exhaust steam inlet and the slots of said shells, substantially as described.
3. A condenser having a stationary slotted shell, a rotary slotted shell movable on said stationary shell, gearing engaging said rotary shell, and means for operating said gearing, said parts being combined substantially as described.
