ROLLER FOR PRINTING SOLID GROUND COLORS ON WALL-PAPER AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.

v Be it known that I, JOSEPH PARAVICINI, a citizen of the lUnited States, and a resident of Bristol, inthe county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rollers for Printing Solid Ground Oo'lors'on Wall-Paper and Methods of Making the Same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled i-n the art to which it appertains to make and usev the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in rollers for printing solid ground colors on nellyallemand;inthemetllflm'alih. same. It is a great desideratum in rollers of this"charactertofh-ave the same absorbent, as not only is the printing thereby rendered more perfect but there is a very large saving in the coloring material used. VAttempts have heretoforebeen made to construct an absorbent roller for the above purpose by cementing a sheet of felt or other similar material to a rubber, iron or Wooden roller. however, is very defective in that the seam formed by the meeting or overlapping edges of the felt interfere with the proper Working of the roller and causes an inferior quality of.

work to be produced.

The object ot' my invention is to remedy the above and other defects and provide an absorbent seamless printing roller which will perform its work in a very eflicient and satisfactory manner.

The invention consists in the novel roller and the method of making the same, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l represents an elevation of a printing roller constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isa central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectionon the line .fr-x Fig. 2.

In carrying my inventioninto effect I take what is known as padding, (a cloth made from Such,

the sweepings of cotton mills, and used in the manufacture of harness) and cut the same into circular Washers of suitable diameter. 5o These washers are tied in bunches, and soaked in a hot solution of glue until-thoroughlysaturated. They are then taken and while yet in a hot state put upon a tube or shaft, and subjected to great pressure whereby a solid, ho- 5 5 mogeneous roller is produced. The roller thus formed is left in lthe press until dry when itis transferred to a lathe and turned to within a short distance of the required size. It is then dipped into a vat containing a solution 6o of glue, Water and clay white, in which it is boiled until thoroughly saturated. It is then again dried, when it will become very hard and rough. It is now put in a lathe and turned to the required size, and is then sub- 6 5 jected to a thorough rubbing with pumice stone and Water. The water and stone wash out the hardening ingredients to a depth of about a quarter of an inch, leaving an absorbent face which will take and retain the 7o coloring matter used for printing, and a hard center or body.

In the said drawings the reference numeral l designates the tube or shaft and 2 the body of the roller constructed as above described.

The numeral 3 designates heads fitted onto .the mandrel either after completion ofthe roller or while it is being made. They are preferably placed on the tube or shaft, just before the tirstturning operation takes place. 8o Between these heads and the ends of the rollers are placed brass washers 4..

The method herein described of making rollers for printing solid ground color on wall paper, the same consisting in taking washers of fibrous or textile material, soaking them in a hot solution of glue, then placing them on a shaft or tube and subjecting them to press- 9o ure, then drying the same and turning in a lathe to near the required size, then dipping in a boiling solution of glue, water and clay white, then drying and turning in a lathe tov In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto atxed my signature xo in presence of two witnesses.
