SIMON S. MORRILL, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
MACHINE FOR SHARPENING PLOWSHARES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,811, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed September 25, 1893- Serial No. 486A4=2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMON S. MORRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sharpening Plowshares; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. My invention relates to certain improvements in rolling machines and its object is to taper or sharpen metal at the edge and ends 1n convex, concave or any other form, but more particularly for sharpening plow shares, and it consists in a horizontal table, upri'ght standards or bolts and a cap, two rollers, and arms, and a series of cog wheels, pinions, shafts and balance wheels and such other devices and combination of devices as will be pointed out in the claims and more fully explained in the specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichs Figure 1 is a left hand side elevation of my improved roller sharpener. end elevation of the same. view of the rollers. Fig.4 is a detached view of the small pinion. Fig. 5 is a detached top view of the raising incline.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the entire views.
A, represents a shell like stand and support for the bearings of the different shafts, such shell having openings on the side for the purpose of admitting a shaft B, such shaft being mounted on boxes 0, which are secured to and supported by bracket-braces D.
The shaft B is provided at its ends with balance wheels B for the purpose of securing a steady and continuous motion. Such shaft B is also provided with a pinion E which is rigidly secured to the center of such shaft. This pinion is-shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
F, is a shaft which is mounted on boxes G, situated at the rear end of the shell A. H, is a gear wheel mounted on and rigidly attached to the center of said shaft F, such gear-wheel H engaging with the pinion E.
Fig. 2 is a rear Fig. 3 is a front The shaft F, at its ends, is provided with cranks or eccentrics I, which engage with and actuate arms J which extend forwardly and engage with rollers K and L.
The shell A is provided, at its front side, with a table M which is rendered rigid and exceedingly stout by means of ribs or brackets M, shown by dotted lines Fig. 1.
N, are bolts or standards which are provided, at their lower ends with nuts 0, and at their upper ends with nuts P, and P, such bolts is inserted on the bolts N and between the nuts P and P such cap Q being provided with ribs R, which give the cap greater rigidity.
The roller K is adapted to engage with the lower side of the cap Q,such-roller having its journals L in the forward ends of the arms J, such arms being widened at their forward ends for the purpose of receiving the journal Kof the rollerL which is immediately beneath and is of a less diameter than the roller K.
S, are inclined plates for the purpose of maintaining the roller K in close proximity to the cap Q, such plates being attached by set screws S to the table M.
T, are brackets which render the boxes G more rigid. V
U represents a plow share which is placed in a position ready to be sharpened.
Power is communicated to the shaft B, thus settingin motion the wheels B. The pinion E then engages with the gear-wheel H, thus setting the shaft F, the eccentrics I, the arms J, and rollers K and L in motion. WVhen the arms J and rollers K and L are thrown forward by means of the eccentrics I, the plow share,or other article to be sharpened, is thrust between the roller L and table M, the rollers being raised by means of the inclined plates S for that purpose, whereupon the rollers will be drawn back by means of the arms .I and eccentrics I which movement draws the metal to the required edge or point. The roller L may be of any required design.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a roller sharpener, the combination with'a suitablestand or shell A, and table M; of the two arms J ,provided with rollers K, and L, at one end, the shaft F, the eccentrics I, on
being adapted to engage with a cap Q which its opposite ends, the standards N, the cap Q on said standards, the inclined plates S, and their set screws, the drive shaft, and suitable mechanism for operating the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a roller sharpener, the combination with the shellA of the shaft B and its balance wheels 13', the pinion E, the gear wheel II, mounted on the shaft F, the eccentrics I attached to the ends of the shaft F, the arms J attached to such eccentrics, and having their forward ends adapted to receive the journals of the rollers K and L, the roller K, the roller L situated immediately beneath and in close proximity to the roller 'K, the table M, the standards N, provided with adjusting nuts, 0, P, P, the cap Q adapted to engage with the standards N,such cap being at an angle to the table M and adapted to engage the rollers K and L between the cap Q and table M, and the incline plates S attached to the table M, allarranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
In a roller sharpener, the combination substantially as shown and described, with a suitable stand or shell having strengthening bracket braces, of a series of shafts, balance wheels, cogwheels and pinions, two arms actuated by eccentrics two rollers of different diameters journaled in the ends of such arms, the smaller being beneath the larger, a table provided with standards, such standards adapted to engage with a cap, such cap being adjustable by means of the nuts P and P and also being at an angle to the table M and lifting inclines.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON S. MORRILL.
