MURRAY 0. SLUSSER AND WILLIAM J. SLUSSER, OF SLUSSER, VIRGINIA.
N UT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,540, dated January 30, 1894.- Application filed SeptemberZO, 1893. Serial No. 4.86.016. (No 1.10.1.1.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MURRAY 0. SLUssER and WILLIAM J. SLUSSER, citizens of the United States, residing at Slusser, in the county of Montgomery and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact desoription of the inv'ention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thisinvention has relation to improvements in nut locks, andit consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate our invention, in
which-- Figure 1 representsa side View of a bolt and nut showing our improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a front or face view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line no, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front View showing our device in modified form. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of our improved nut lock key. Fig. 7 is a front view, partly in section of a modification. Fig. 8 is also a front view partly in section of a modification, and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the locking pin in modified form. Fig. 10 is a side view of the hand bar. I Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a headed bolt; the
threaded end a, of which is flattened on one side as at b.
B, represents the nut having the usual female screw threads 0 which engage the male threads on the bolt 5 said nut is provided with a recess 01 on its outer face, in which is fitted snugly a plate 6, the lower edge of which is provided with a V-shaped notch j, that re ceives a correspondingly shaped pin g, which latter is fiat on one side as at h and engages the fiat surface of the bolt. This locking pin is provided with lip portion '11 designed to receive the end It, of the releasing or unlocking hand barl shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings.
ing pin is forced or driven in between the plate and bolt, thus when so engaged said nut or bolt is prevented from turning thereby preventing accidental displacement of the nut.
When it is desired to remove the nut from the bolt, the operator simply pries the pin outwardly with the hand lever; the end k, of which engaging the lip on the locking pin. In Fig. 5, our device is shown in modified form, wherein the inner face of the recess is roughened as at m, and the outer face edge ofthe plate is correspondingly roughened to engage said plate as shown, to prevent the plate from turning independently of the nut. In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the locking pin has double beveled sides as shown at n; the plate and bolt each having V- shaped grooves o, o, in which said pin is inserted. The plate may be also slightly modified as shown in Fig. 7, the same having the ends p, 19, extended on either side of the bolt. A nut look as herein described is durable, the nut not liable to become accidentally displaced, and is cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a nut lock in combination with a MURRAY C. SLUSSER. WILLIAM J SLUSSER.
