UNITED STATES HERBERT L. STILLMAN, OF OIIARLESTOVVN, RHODE ISLAND.
RAIL FOR RAI LWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,445, dated January 23, 1894. Application filed October 31, 1892. fierial 110.450. 139. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT L. STILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oharlestown, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rails for Railways; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de supporting rail sections.
0 c 0, represent the central or tread portion of the rail.
d d (1, represent cross-tie supports.
' f f f, represent joints in the sections.
In operation, after apertures have been formed throughthe rail sections, I place the sections of the rail togetherso that two whole continuous sections shall be opposite every broken joint, as seen in the drawings, in which the right hand supporting section joints over second tie, withoentral and left'hand sections continuous. Over the fourth tie, the left hand supporting section joints with the right hand and central sections continuous. Over the third tie, the central or tread section of the rail, joints with both lateral supporting rail sections continuous. cess of double long laps against every single break, being continuous without limit, to any length of this compound rail desired, the sec-.
tions in thisposition being firmly secured by bolts or other fastenings. By this construction it will be seen that extra strong joints will be made by very long laps, and two whole, continuous sections appear against every single break.
Having described this invention, what I claim is- The compound continuous rail herein described, consisting of a central or tread section with two lateral supporting sections, with joints breaking so as to everywhere present two Whole sections against every break, as applied and laid on cross ties, so that every joint break shall be supportedbya cross tie, substantially as specified.
