UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. HUNTER, OF BUEFALO, NEW YORK.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,266, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed August 7,1893- Serial No. 432 593. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES B. HUNTER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Fire-ExtinguishingApparatus, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to combined hose-reels and chemical fire-extinguishers, either stationary, portable or transportable.
My object is to provide a chemical fire-extinguisher with a hose-reel attachment swiveled thereon, and more or less inclosing the same; and also providing means whereby the rotation of the reel will cause the chemical to be deposited into the other ingredients in the tank of the extinguisher.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1, is a sectional elevation of my apparatus. Fig. 2, is a top plan thereof.
A, is the tank or body of the extinguisher, provided with a suitable cover a closing its top, and provided with a central aperture,
into which the flanged tubeb is inserted, A
and -bis a suitable packing between said flange and the cover, said tube having a bearing and being free to rotate in said cover. A flanged tubular sleeve cis screwed onto or otherwise detachably connected to said tube, and-c'is a suitable packing ring between its flange and the top of the cover. This sleeve has also a flange or rim -dat its upper end, and d is a screw cap, or other device for closing the top thereof, and removable for the insertion of the charge, as of water and marble dust. Said tube and sleeve are adapted to rotate together.
hose connected thereto in the usual manner,
all so that by the unreeling of the hose, the reel is rotated independent of the tank. In said cover a suitable aperture is provided through which the tubular acid-proof acid bottle m-is inserted, the same being preferably constructed from wax, parafiine, or analogous material, and -mis a screw cap closing said aperture.
Upon the lower end of the tube -b a knife nis secured in such manner that the rotation of the reel will cause it to cutoff said acidbottle, which will drop into the charge in the tank and deposit the acid therein. As a means for preventing the accidental rotation of the reel, a hole is provided in one of the reel bars, and also in the flange of the cover, so that the nozzle --w of the hose can be inserted into both holes, and this also operates to carry the nozzle.
When it is desired tobe used the nozzle is removed from its support and the hose is unreeled and the rotation of the reel cuts off or breaks the acid-holder and the gas charge is generated and flows through the hose, no matter how little has been unreeled.
It will be apparent that the hose can be dipipe connected to the interior of said tank through said swivel and carried bysaid frame, and a hose connected to said pipe and wound onto said frame.
2. The combination with a fire-extinguisher, of a reel swiveled thereon, a knife actuated by the rotation of the reel, and an acid-holder with which the knife is adapted to engage.
In witness'whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of July, 1893.
JAMES B. HUNTER.
In presence of HERBERT A. CARHART, HOWARD P. DENIsoN.
