DAVID N. MELVIN, OF LINOLEUMVILLE, NEW YORK.
APPARATUQ FOR PRESSING LINOLEUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,241, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed February 15,1893. Serial No. 462,496. (Nomodel-l To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, DAVID N. MELVIN, acitizen of Linoleumville, in the county of Rich mond and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Pressing Linoleum; and I do 'the press and the devices by meansof which it is operated shall be arranged in a simple and compact form.
A further object is to construct the press, tank and pump so that they shall be intimately associated and adapted to travel together over a table.
A further object is to produce an apparatus for pressing linoleum onto the foundation canvas, which shall be simple in construction, easy to manipulate and efiectual in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a face View of the apparatus, showing the press and reservoir in section. Fig. 2 is an end view.
A, A, represent girders, supported by suitable uprights A, and at their upper ends adapted to form trackways a for the support of the press hereinafter described.
Beneath the girders A, A, a table B is 10- I cated, and under this table steam pipes b are arranged for heating the same.
Between the girders A, A, a tank 0 is located and provided at its upper end with axles c, on which wheels d are mounted and adapted to run on the trackways a. To the lower end of the tank 0, a hydraulic cylinder D is se cured, said tank and hydraulic cylinder being adapted to communicate with a pump E carried by the tank, by means of ducts e, f. The plunger F in the hydraulic cylinder is reduced somewhat in size below the upper portion thereof, to produce an annular chamber g and a shoulder g',and at the lower end man is is connected. At the upper end of the pitman 70, an eccentric Z is located. A shaft G, (to which power may betransmitted in any suitable manner) passes through the cocentric Z and through a box m on the top of the tank 0. The eccentricl is provided with a feather n adapted to enter and have a sliding movement in a key-way n in the shaft.
Thus it will be seen that the eccentric will A move along the shaft G when the tank and press are moved.
From the construction and arrangement of parts as above described it will be seen that the hydraulic press, the tank for supplying the water, and the pump for forcing the water into the cylinder of the press, are intimately associated and capable of being moved over the table B.
In order to provide means for moving the hydraulic press and attached parts, a rack bar 0 is secured to one of the girders A, and
a pinion 0', carried by a shaft 0 mounted in.
suitable brackets on the cylinder, is adapted to mesh with said rack bar. The shaft 0 is preferably provided with a wheel 0 by means of which to operate it.
I do not wish to confine myself to the exact position of the several members of the pump and cylinder as above described. For instance, the ram of the hydraulic cylinder may be carried on Wheels, the center of the ram being made hollow and the pump may be placed inside the hollow ram and this space used as the tank. The cylinder then will reciprocate instead of the ram, as shown in the drawings.
Various other arrangements may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention,as for instance, the shaft and eccentric may be placed on the side instead of the top,-although I prefer the arrangement shown in the drawings.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a track-way, a table and a shaft, of a hydraulic press, tank and pump, supported by and adapted to run on said trackway, an eccentric on said shaft, a feather carried by said eccentric and adapted to enter a key-way in the shaft, anda pitman connecting said eccentric with the pump, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a trackway, of a tank located between the two tracks comprising said trackway, an axle carried by said tank, a hydraulic press at the lower end of the tank, a pump carried by said tank, a rack bar carried by one of the trackways or girders, a shaft carrier at the lower end of the tank, and a pinion carried by said shaft and adapted to mesh with said rack bar, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a trackway, of a table located under the same, means for heating said table, a tank, an axle carried by the tank, wheels carried by the axle and adapted to run on the trackway, a hydraulic press carried at the lower end of the tank, a pump carried by the tank, a shaft, and means for DAVID N.
